You can’t talk about the best electric bikes 2022 - 2023 without talking about the electric Brompton folding bike. Brompton have kept everything that makes their folding bike perfect for city riding and storage and have added motor and battery to give all the benefits of an e-bike. As with all Bromptons, there are a number of choices involved in choosing the perfect one for you and this guide will help you find it.

Brompton Bicycles

Brompton are a British company, formed in London, and are still manufactured there to this day. They set out to make an exceptionally compact, lightweight bike that would be perfect for city riding and cycle paths and could easily be folded down for public transport and storage at home or at work with one of, if not the, best folding mechanism in the business. The small wheels allow the Brompton to fold down to it's compact shape and give the bike its unique city handling.

The Brompton electric bikes aimed to keep all of these attributes but with added assistance for longer rides or for a less strenuous commute or leisure ride. The folded bike easily fits in tight busy spaces so you do not need to lock it outside as it can go wherever you go.

Battery and Motor

We will start with the constants - two things that stay the same across the range are the battery and motor. All the models come with a motor that is a front hub driven motor which gives 40n/m of torque for ample help around the city and. The motor comes with three power mode in low, medium and high assistance depending on how much help you require.

The battery is mounted on the front of the bicycle and is easily removable with a handy shoulder strap for when you have to fold and take your electric bike on public transport or store in a smaller space. The battery is a 300 w/h which will give approximately 30 miles on a single charge

Frame

The Brompton Electric folding bikes come in two different models – The Brompton C-line Explore and the Brompton P-line Urban.

C line Explore

The Brompton electric C-line folding bike comes with an all-steel frame, fork and rear frame for incredible strength and comfort over uneven ground. The C-line comes with 6-speed drivetrain for plenty of gears to spin you up and down hills. Rim brakes are the choice on all Brompton models due to less weight and so that the bike folds correctly and rounding off the weight savings is the forged aluminium crank (with integrated chainguard to avoid your clothes getting oily).

The entire C Line Explore package comes in at approximately 17.4kg (14.5kg without battery) which is relatively lightweight in the electric bikes world. The battery alone weights 2.9kg with its carry bag.

P-line Urban

The Brompton P-Line urban comes with the same steel main frame and fork however the rear triangle (rear frame) is made from shock absorbing titanium keeps the strength and comfort but reduce weight significantly. The bike is also finished with lightweight componentry such as the superlight Brompton saddle (with integrated carry handle), saddle hinge clamp, tyres and tubes to get this bike as low as 15.6kg with battery (certain specs will vary).

The P-line urban comes with weight saving and reliable 4 speed shifting and also comes with Brompton’s redesigned suspension block on the rear for added comfort. An optional extra with the P-line is the roller frame rear rack which weighs only 341 grams and allows you to wheel your Brompton easily due to a larger and lighter roller wheel so you can sling the battery over your shoulder and wheel your bike like it is a lightweight suitcase as the lighter rolling wheels glide along effortlessly.

Handlebars

As with their non-electric models, the electric P Line and the electric C Line there is a choice of handlebar height to allow potential riders to decide on the sitting position. The handlebar heights are mid or high. The choice here is very much personal preference, and it hinges upon whether you like a more upright position (high HB) or a more neutral sitting position (mid HB). The height you are would also have an influence on this choice.

The Brompton C-Line is available in a wide array of colours including Black Lacquer, Cloud Blue, House Red, Matt Black and Racing Green.

The Brompton P-Line Urban is available in two colours - Storm Grey and Midnight Black Metallic.
