Details

Whyte G-170 S 2018

Building on what they achieved with their legendary G-160 Gravity Enduro Suspension bike, the G170 is Whyte's longest-travel enduro rig to date.

The G-170 S is a great value 170mm travel enduro race-ready full suspension mountain bike, built on Whyte's proven SCR (single chain ring) frameset with 148mm Boost dropouts on the rear and a RockShox Yari RC 35mm-stanchion suspension fork with a 110mm x 15mm Maxle Ultimate axle on the front.

  • SCR is Whyte's Single Chain Ring specific dual suspension frame
  • The beefed up rear triangle is optimized for its SCR (single chain ring) SRAM 1x11 transmission
  • Its SCS Symmetrical Chain Stays and its wider main pivot create an even stronger and more reliably flex-resistant rig
  • SCR translates to you, the rider, as improved cornering confidence and enhanced suspension performance
  • The SCR frame also supports the rear wheel better and boosts its lateral stiffness
  • WTB Convict 27.5 x 2.5/2.4 inch TCS (tubeless compatible system) folding tyres on WTB STp 29mm-wide rims make it very viable to upgrade to riding tubeless
  • Why upgrade to tubeless?
  • SRAM Guide R 4-pot 180mm rotor brake calipers are DH-race proven
  • Guide brakes offer reach-adjustable one-finger control and feature a stainless steel Heat Shield between the pad and caliper body to help ensure consistent stopping power
  • With its smooth-operating bar-mounted Paddle Remote, Whyte's new Drop.it dropper seatpost makes it super easy to adjust the saddle on the move from high enough for efficient climbing to low enough for epic downhilling

The benefits of Whyte's unique MTB trail geometry in their own words
'
We push the front wheel further in front of the rider at a slacker angle to the frame. This helps the steering ‘self correct', keeping you on track whether you're ripping down a rowdy mountain trail or a back road short cut turns out shady. By adding a long reach top tube we can team the stable steering with a super short, snap reacting stem for dodging traffic and potholes on the way to work or surfing sliding tyres down a black run descent. Add our own carefully selected handlebar shapes and you've got the perfect balanced of confident communication and connection in your hands.

Steering feel alone isn't enough to create a benchmark setting, award winning handling character though. We also drop the centre of gravity of our bikes as low as possible so they naturally glue themselves onto the ground through corners rather than leaving you perched and precarious. Because driving a barge is dull we keep the back ends super short whatever the wheel size to guarantee the hop and pop agility you need to bring the trail alive.'

Add all the other features that make a Whyte mountain bike special, such as their unique Quad 4 suspension with UK-proof lifetime guaranteed pivot bearings, it's hard to imagine a better trail bike for the money. See our Why we're in love with Whyte mountain bikes blog

Here's how Whyte describe the G-170 S
The all new G-170 frame takes everything we learnt from the G-160 and improves it. From the oversize hardware on our main pivot complete with Enduro bearings, to the new Flat Mount dropout, the G-170 is literally built to handle anything you throw at it.

The S is loaded with the very latest developments in Enduro/Trail bikes. WTB i29mm rims combined with TCS front and rear specific tyres help to give neutral handling without too much drag.

The G-170 has extra width built into the rear chainstays to allow the rider to fully exploit the future developments in wide high volume tyres but maintain mud clearance.
