Whyte Clifton 2018

Lightweight alloy fork, integrated lighting, Shimano STEPS power-assistance and 650x47c tubeless-ready tyres: the Clifton takes commuter e-bikes to another level.

Whyte electric bikes

  • Significantly, Whyte had been considering launching an electric bike for a number of years, but decided to hold off till e-bike technology came of age
  • The launch of STEPS was the cue for Whyte to create their first e-bike - the Coniston - in 2016
  • See our 30-plus reasons to love STEPS Shimano Total Electric Power System blog
  • Combining STEPS with Whyte's UK-proof bicycle design ethos has enabled this Cotswolds-based company to create the smoothest-riding and most reliable e-commuter bikes we've ever had the pleasure to offer
  • To find out how great it is to ride a bike that makes riding up hills and into headwinds near effortless, read our Simon's blog on owning a Coniston

Upgrades from Whyte Coniston

The Whyte Coniston set the standard for cleaner-designed smoother-operating e-commuter bikes. The Clifton has a similar quality feel but with the following subtle differences.

  • With its lower bottom bracket and shorter wheelbase, the Clifton offers a quicker-steering more road bike-like feel
  • The Clifton's alloy fork is significantly lighter weight than the Coniston's suspension fork and its flat mounts makes for exceptionally neat disc brake calliper fitting
  • The WTB Byway 650 x 47c folding tyres conform to the growing consensus that, within reason, wider tyres don't just create a plusher, more comfortable ride: they can also be quicker - more on this
  • Both the tyres and the WTB STp i23 650b rims are tubeless ready to enhance the riding feel and to introduce a new level of puncture resistance - more on this
  • Integrated lights, controlled by the bike's handlebar mount computer and powered by its battery means you should never be caught in the dark on this bike
  • Although they might not be quite as sophisticated as the Coniston's Shimano brakes, the Coniston's Tektro Auriga brakes offer all the benefits you look for in quality hydraulic disc brakes
  • If you're familiar with Whyte bikes, the Clifton rides like a Whyte Stirling flatbar road bike
  • Then it's turbocharged with around £1,500-worth of STEPS e-bike technology to make the bike feel blissfully like you're always riding with a tailwind

Same as Whyte Coniston

  • A fantastic range of 10 gears via its Shimano Deore Shifter, rear mech and 11-36 cassette in a bang up to the minute 1x10 format - why this is good
  • The gear cables are enclosed to cope with varied climes - a fine example of Whyte's 'UK-proof' design ethos
  • Fitted with an extra sturdy chainstay-mounted kickstand - handy for parking the bike while you grab your key to unlock the battery to recharge it when you get home
  • Eyelets and clearance make it easy to fit a rack and/or mudguards to this bike
  • If you would like us to fit anything to a new bike, just ask when you order it and we'll waive the normal fitting charge

Whyte Custom-drawn Tubing
We believe that Whyte are the only company in the bicycle industry who build every hydroformed aluminium frame with custom drawn tubing. This means that Whyte go to the expense of spec'ing a different tube set for each frame size. Custom tubing is Whyte's guarantee that their frames will be as light as possible in every size.

Whyte Geometry
Whyte are famed for getting their frame geometry just right, to ensure you feel confident and centered on the bike. So it goes with the Whyte Clifton. Its road bike-like seat tube angle (73.5 degrees) positions you over the cranks for maximum pedalling efficiency. Its comparatively shallow 70 degree head tube angle makes the bike reassuringly stable, especially on downhills. The happy result is a bicycle that rides like its a natural extension of your limbs.

The Whyte Highgate is technically identical to the Clifton but the frame top tube is 20mm shorter, making it a better fit for the majority of women (but not all) and for some guys.
