Giant Propel Advanced Pro 1 2019 Road Bike

Sharing key frame design features of the Propel bikes ridden by Team Giant-Alpecin, this aero road bike is a strong contender for 'fastest road bike for the money'.

Blistering speed potential aside, the quality that has most impressed cyclists about the Giant Propel Advanced's ride quality is the level of comfort, previously unheard of in an aero road bike.

Giant Propel key features

  • Shares key design features of the bikes ridden by the Giant-Alpecin pro team
  • Their mastery of carbon frame lay-up and design enables Giant to introduce a level of comfort, previously unheard of from an aero road bike
  • AeroSystem Shaping Technology - data compiled from Computational Fluid Dynamics research and wind-tunnel tests was used by Giant's engineer's to optimize the shape of every Advanced Grade Composite Propel frameset tube to maximise aerodynamic efficiency
  • Giant SpeedControl SL Brakes - the front brake is mounted behind the fork crown, the rear behind the seatstays, to shield them from the wind. The brakes' trailing edges further reduce turbulence
  • The Giant Vector composite seatpost continues the aerodynamic theme
  • PowerCore - the massively oversized bottom bracket/chainstay area features a fully integrated, 86mm-wide bottom bracket to more efficiently convert your pedaling input into speed
  • OverDrive - Giant’s tapered oversized fork steerer-tube design increases front-end stiffness and enhances steering performance
  • Around £1,000-worth of Giant SLR 1 Aero Wheelsystem composite wheels with matching Giant Gavia SL Tubeless tyres do wonders for this Propels' ride quality
  • These tubeless tyres promise extra comfort and fewer punctures. Why this is a good thing.
  • The Shimano Ultegra 2x11 drivetrain (including chainset and cassette!) is a byword for smooth-shifting reliability
  • The Shimano Ultegra chainset's Hollowtech outer chainring saves weight. Another upgrade Ultegra riders appreciate is that it offers a firmer shift than 105, delivering a quicker downshift onto the smaller ring under pressure

Giant Advanced Carbon Composite Frameset

  • Every Advanced frameset is fabricated in-house by Giant, from its raw performance-grade Toray T-700 carbon filament to its final lacquered finish, to create a stiffer, lighter weight and more compliant ride
  • Blending Toray T700 carbon filament and resin with vibration-absorbing particles helps maximise rider comfort and frame strength (hence the lifetime guarantee)
  • Modified Monocoque Construction: the front triangle is assembled and moulded as one continuous piece
  • The main frame is then joined to the rear chainstays and seatstays in a secondary process
  • This process eliminates the outermost woven composite sheet to reduce weight without affecting ride quality, strength or stiffness
  • As with every Giant Advanced Pro model, the fork is also full carbon

Here's how Giant describe the Propel Advanced Pro 1

GIVE YOURSELF THE AERO ADVANTAGE—WHEN AND WHERE YOU NEED IT MOST. THIS ALL-NEW WIND-SLICING ROAD BIKE MINIMIZES DRAG AND SAVES PRECIOUS WATTS IN SPRINTS, BREAKAWAYS AND ATTACKS. BECAUSE SMALL GAINS LEAD TO BIG WINS.

Developed with pro sprinters and proven in the heat of the battle, the all-new Propel Advanced Pro combines the superior aerodynamic performance of the current Propel Disc range with the convenience of new and improved rim brake performance. Extensive CFD analysis and dynamic wind-tunnel testing was used to optimize every frame tube and angle in a process called AeroSystem Shaping technology. The frame is handcrafted using Advanced-grade composite material to produce a bike that is both lightweight and stiff, with a sharp, responsive ride quality. Purpose-built aero road technologies, including SpeedControl brakes, a Vector seatpost and new rim-brake technology put the new Propel Advanced Pro ahead of the pack.
