The Silex has always been about the road less travelled, camaraderie, and riding for the sheer sake of it.
As gravel has split into two distinct camps, racing and adventure, Merida's new Mission platform has stepped up to handle the sharp end of competition.
The Silex, meanwhile, keeps doing what it does best, and does it brilliantly. Worth noting: a week before this generation launched, Matej Mohoric won the 2023 Gravel World Championships on one.
The Merida Silex 4000 gravel bike was designed from a blank sheet of paper. Rather than adapting a road or cyclocross frame, Merida looked to modern mountain bike geometry for inspiration: long top tube, relaxed head tube angle, short stem.
The result is a gravel bike that feels planted and confidence-inspiring on loose, technical terrain without losing its composure on longer tarmac stretches. This second-generation frame also runs a revised fork design, so you can fit a suspension fork down the line without upsetting the geometry.
On the practical side, the aluminium frame comes with five bottle boss positions, rack mounts for loaded touring, internal routing for a dropper post, and even provision for a dynamo system.
Whether you're heading out for a long weekend or committing to something more serious, the Merida Silex 4000 has the mounting points to carry what you need.
Braking across the Silex range (200 aside) is handled by hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors. Calipers sit on the chainstay using flat-mount, which keeps everything tidy and distributes braking forces more evenly through the frame.
A few things worth knowing:
- Five bottle boss positions, rack mounts, and dropper post routing make the Merida 4000 Silex genuinely versatile for multi-day riding
- Revised fork design allows for a suspension fork swap without geometry changes
- Hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors and flat-mount calipers on all models except the 200
- Warm Slate Grey/Black colourway looks far better in person than in photos
