The correct size of bike will put you in an optimum position so you get the efficiency, comfort or manoeuvrability you require whether on a road bike, electric bike, or mountain bike.

We stock a wide variety of Giant Bikes and Giant Electric Bikes in all different models and sizes. We also stock a massive range of the female-specific Liv Bikes and Liv Electric Bikes with most models available for test rides. We have recently introduced our dedicated Giant Store Edinburgh, and Giant Store Stirling.

Please Note: Size charts are meant as a guide only and the best way to find the right bike sizing is to sit on the bike and test it out. If you’re in-between sizes, or unsure please get in touch – we’re always happy to assist.

Mountain Bike Sizing

Mountain bikes are trending towards a more flexible sizing system where you have a greater degree of personal preference. Opting for a larger frame will increase stability in a straight line while choosing a smaller frame, with a shorter top tube, will give more manoeuvrability on technical trails. This is something we will happily discuss if you were to call our online department or pop in to any of our 6 stores in AberdeenNewcastle or one of the three in Edinburgh – Bruntsfield Canonmills or, as previously mentioned, our new Giant Store Edinburgh, and Giant Store Stirling

Giant Road Bike Sizing

There are three road bike models in the Giant road bikes range, the Defy, TCR and Propel. The size chart for these three bikes are identical but we would warn against assuming you are the same size in all of them. Just because you are a Medium/Large Defy, does not mean that you are a Medium/Large in the TCR or the Propel. We would advise that you sit on the new model you are thinking about to make absolute sure, especially if you are in-between sizes.

A Note on In-Between Sizes

It is worth discussing what happens if you are in-between sizes on the size chart as there are either general rules or personal preferences depending on which style of bike you ride.

Road Bikes

If you are in-between sizes of a Giant road bike, the general rule is that you would size down as you really do not want to be overstretched on a road bike. As we mentioned though, this is just a general rule as some people who are between will be better to go for the size up. If you are in doubt, we are always on hand to help you with sizing.

Gravel Bikes

Similar to road bikes, if you are between sizes on a Giant gravel bike you would tend to size down. The reason for this is to have a shorter and more manoeuvrable bike, ideal for off-road, technical riding.

You would sometimes opt for a bigger size bike if you are using the bike for bikepacking as a larger frame gives more stability when carrying more luggage, providing it is still a comfortable position for you to ride in.

Mountain Bikes

Mountain bike sizing has changed significantly in the last few years. Many companies have changed the geometry of their bikes to allow a choice of size based on how you would like the bike to handle. You can opt for a smaller frame to prioritises more manoeuvrable handing for more technical trails, or a larger frame for more straight line stability and speed for cross country riding or flowy trails.

Electric Bikes

If you are between sizes on an electric version of the above bikes; road, gravel, or mountain, then the same principles apply as the above. The one that is slightly different is for the hybrids.

If you are in-between sizes on a electric hybrid bike, you would tend to size down to make the bike more manageable in terms of size and weight, but also for a more comfortable sitting position.

Bike Sizing For Women

Women and men tend to have different bodily proportions – women usually have longer legs for their height while men tend to have more length in the torso. For this reason, women usually need a higher front end of the bike with a shorter reach. Giant’s sister company, Liv Bikes, manufacture bikes for this exact purpose – to be more comfortable and efficient for women.

That being said, not everyone fits into this general sizing rule as you do get men with longer legs and women with longer torsos. In these cases, there is still the perfect bike but there may need to be some tweaks to the setup. We can easily help with this as all that is usually required is a change of saddle, stem, or handlebars. We fit lots of men on Liv bikes and lots of women on Giant bikes. There are always options.

Frequently Asked Questions

We thought it would be handy to give the answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding Giant sizing.

Why Choose Giant Bikes over Other Brands?

There are a number of reasons you would choose Giant bikes over other brands. The first is the quality of the frames and forks. Giant produce some of the best frames and forks on the market for both efficiency and longevity. They make all of these frames themselves.

Which leads us on to the second reason; you get incredible value for money from Giant bikes due to the fact that they produce all their frames and forks (and most of the finishing kit like wheels, saddles and handlebars) themselves. Instead of having to pay someone to manufacture these frames, they can pass on this saving to their customers.

What’s the Difference Between Giant’s Road, Mountain, and Hybrid Bikes?

We are going to keep this simple as otherwise it would be a really long answer.

Giant Road bikes are designed to be as efficient on tarmac as possible. They have skinny tyres, are lightweight, and aerodynamic. They are not designed for any other surfaces than tarmac.

Giant Mountain bikes are designed to go off-road in mud, over tree roots and take on technical mountain descent. Because of the suspension and knobbly tyres, mountain bikes are not particularly efficient on roads or paved paths. Mountain bikes are available in hardtail versions, and full-suspension versions depending on what you need the bike to do.

Giant Hybrid bikes are also often referred to as commuter bikes and are designed for a mix of tarmac and cycle paths/light gravel. These have flat handlebars for a comfortable riding position for the majority of people.

Are Giant Electric Bikes Worth the Extra Cost?

To people who are after a bike with electrical assist? Absolutely. Giant electric bikes have the same incredible value for money that they are famed for and the componentry they use is always from reputable companies such as Shimano, SRAM, or MicroShift.

What’s the difference between the Giant Fathom, Stance, Talon, and Trance mountain bikes?

Here is a mix of hardtail and full suspension mountain bikes. We will go through each one and highlight the key features.

  • Giant Talon – Entry level hardtail bike for leisure rather than serious mountain biking. Perfect for children on their first adult bike or for beginners on light trails. 80 to 100mm of suspension travel depending on size.
  • Giant Fathom – Another hardtail but for more serious mountain biking. Can be taken on trails up to about red level. Perfect for those wanting to develop their skills at trail centres. 130mm of suspension travel for more forgiveness on more technical trails.
  • Giant Stance – Entry level hardtail at an incredible price. Great for a first full-sus MTB or for a budget friendly bike for a kid’s first full mountain bike. 140mm of fork travel and 125mm at the rear.
  • Giant Trance – An incredibly capable cross country MTB with 150mm front suspension travel, and 140mm at the rear.

Can I Test Ride Giant Bikes Before Buying?

We allow short test rides in dry weather of any Giant bike we hold in stock. We cannot allow the bikes to be taken to trail centres or to any muddy tracks as we need to keep the bikes in saleable condition. We do occasionally have specific models of some bikes so that these can be tested for longer periods. Please ask online or in-store to see if we have a demo model of the bike you are interested in.

What If I Am Between Sizes on the Giant Size Chart?

We covered this in the article above but the short version is that you would usually size down to the smaller bike if you are between sizes on a road bike, gravel bike, or hybrid bike*. The exception here is for mountain bikes where you have a choice of either the smaller size for a more manoeuvrable bike for technical trails, or the larger bike for straight line stability and speed on more flowing trails or cross country routes.

*Please Note: these are general rules and will not apply to everyone. If you are in doubt, please get in touch.

Do Giant Bikes Come With a Warranty, And What Does It Cover?

All Giant bikes will come with a frame and fork warranty. This can range from 5 years to lifetime. The warranty will also depend on when you bought the bike. If you are in any doubt, please get in touch or ask the salesperson the warranty for a particular bike.

Aside from the frame and fork warranty, manufacturers will also give a one-year warranty on non-wearable parts and in the case of batteries and motors on electric bikes, it is a two-year warranty.

How Much Should I Budget for a Quality Giant Bike in the UK?

This one is impossible to answer as there are so many variables. The style of bike, electric or non-electric, what you need the bike for etc.. The best answer to this question will come from one of our salespeople either online or in store. They can ascertain what you are after and guide you from there.
