Eight generations. Over two decades of development. And the Specialized Tarmac SL8 is the result: not just the fastest Tarmac ever built, but, according to Specialized's own Ride Science team, the fastest race bike in the world. Your legs up for it?
If you've been reading any Specialized Tarmac review trying to work out whether the hype is real, the numbers do the talking. In race simulations using real-world data, the Tarmac SL8 is 16.6 seconds faster over 40km, 128 seconds faster over Milan-San Remo, and 20 seconds quicker over the legendary Tourmalet climb.
Among Specialized road bikes, this is the one that sits above everything else, and among different types of bikes in the UK, very little comes close at this level.
The SL8 Expert comes in a striking blue metallic colourway that turns heads on any road, and if you've had your eye on the Specialized Tarmac in blue, this is the spec to go for.
A full Ultegra Di2 groupset, C38 carbon tubeless-ready wheelset, and an SL7 stem with Specialized Expert Shallow Drop alloy handlebars make the Tarmac SL8 Expert an exceptionally well-rounded race bike that doesn't ask you to compromise anywhere.
Features:
1. AERO IN EVERYTHINGSpecialized has focused on aero where it actually matters, at the leading edge, rather than just where it looks the part. The result is their most aerodynamic road bike to date, more aero than even the Venge. The new Speed Sniffer nose cone optimises clean air for maximum advantage.
By moving the steer tube back, the leading edge of the head tube becomes sharper and lower-drag. And using new UCI rules, the Tarmac Specialized bike now features the narrowest, most aerodynamic seatpost Specialized has ever produced, allowing dirty air around the legs to flow back more cleanly. Doesn't victory smell sweet?
2. MINIMUM WEIGHT, MAXIMUM AERO
Drawing on lessons from the Aethos, the Specialized SL8 tips the scales at a genuinely jaw-dropping 685-gram frame, 15% lighter than the SL7 and lighter than anything else on the WorldTour. The frame's shape carries load so efficiently that extra carbon stiffness layers simply aren't needed. The Tarmac SL8 Expert can be built at UCI minimum weight with a full aero setup without any trade-offs.
3. GOES LIKE HELL, RIDES LIKE HEAVENA 33% improvement in stiffness-to-weight over the SL7 takes already legendary handling to another level entirely. The Specialized Tarmac SL8 is stiffer at the pedals, more precise at the bars, and 6% more compliant in the saddle than its predecessor, floating over rough roads with a suppleness that feels genuinely out of place in the high-strung world of race bikes.
Thanks to Rider-First Engineering, every rider, regardless of size, gets the same ride quality and handling. Proven geometry and 32mm tyre clearance carry over from the SL7, making adaptation straightforward and leaving room to run higher-volume tyres when British road conditions demand it.
4. BEYOND GENDERSpecialised makes a point worth stating plainly here: there's often more difference between two male cyclists than between a male and female rider. Building bikes around gender alone is arbitrary, and the Tarmac SL8 is built for every rider, full stop.
