After eight generations and over two decades of development, the Specialized Tarmac SL8 Expert Di2 is more than the fastest Tarmac ever built. Specialized is calling it the fastest race bike in the world, and the numbers back it up.
Using race simulations based on real-world data, Specialized's Ride Science team found the Tarmac SL8 is 16.6 seconds faster over 40km, 128 seconds faster over Milan-San Remo, and 20 seconds quicker over the legendary Tourmalet climb compared to the previous generation.
So how did they get there? Aerodynamics and weight savings working together rather than one at the expense of the other. Specialized put aero shaping where it matters most, along the leading edges of the tubes, and the result is more aerodynamic than the Venge ever was.
At the same time, they borrowed what they learned from the Aethos to produce a 685g frame, 15% lighter than the SL7. That's a proper achievement when you consider how aero the thing is.
Stiffness-to-weight has improved by 33% over the SL7 too, which means sharper handling and more responsive acceleration without the frame feeling harsh. The geometry is the same World Championship-proven setup that Specialized have refined over years of professional racing.
This Tarmac SL8 Expert in Obsidian Metallic looks as good as it goes. The Specialized Obsidian Metallic finish has a depth to it that photos don't quite capture, somewhere between dark grey and black depending on the light.
The Specialized Tarmac Expert spec is race-ready without needing upgrades:
- Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset, wireless electronic shifting that's smooth and reliable in all conditions
- Roval C38 carbon tubeless-ready wheelset, a solid all-round race wheel
- SL7 stem with Specialized Expert Shallow Drop alloy handlebars, a comfortable bar shape that still puts you in an aggressive position when you need it
- FACT 10r carbon frame and fork, the same layup used across the upper end of the Tarmac range
If you've been riding an SL7 or an older alloy road bike and you're looking to step up, the Specialized Tarmac Di2 at this price point is where things get serious. You're getting the full aero frame, electronic shifting, and carbon wheels without crossing into the eye-watering territory of the S-Works.
