Specialized Crux DSW Comp Gravel Bike
The Specialized Crux DSW Comp is one of those bikes that makes you question everything you thought you knew about alloy frames. Specialized took the carbon Crux, stripped it back to first principles, and rebuilt the whole thing using their patented D'Aluisio Smartweld (DSW) process.
The result is the lightest alloy gravel frame in the world, and a ride that genuinely has no business being made of metal.
At 1,399g (56cm, lightest colourway), the frame alone turns heads. Pair it with Specialized's Fact 12r carbon fork and a performance-focused build, and the complete bike comes in at 9.37kg. No other alloy gravel bike gets close.
Why the DSW process matters
DSW uses hydroforming to precisely match tube-to-tube joints, producing cleaner, stronger welds and a frame that can be twice as durable as a traditionally welded alloy build. Specialized also used it to engineer a unique single-piece downtube and bottom bracket shell, shaving grams while stiffening exactly where it counts.
Geometry that actually works off-road
The Specialized Crux gravel bike shares the same performance geometry as its carbon sibling, and that's not an accident. A longer reach improves weight distribution for confident, quick handling. A lower stack puts you in a position that works hard on loose gravel, rough tracks, and long days in the saddle. At 72mm of bottom-bracket drop, it sits right in the sweet spot between nimble and planted.
Tyre clearance for proper British conditions
- 47mm clearance (700c) and up to 2.1" on 650b wheels
- Matches the carbon Crux's capability across the board
- Mud, gravel, forest tracks, long-distance routes — it handles them without complaint
In short
If you've been looking at the Specialized Crux Comp and wondering whether the alloy version compromises anything meaningful, the honest answer is: barely.
You get the same geometry, the same clearance, the same race-bred handling. What you're getting with this Specialized Crux DSW Comp is a bike that punches well above its price point, built properly by people who are clearly obsessed over every gram and weld. The Shadow Silver/California Sunshine colourway looks sharp too!
