The Merida Silex 9000 sits in an interesting spot among the different types of bikes Merida makes. It's not a pure road bike, not a cyclocross bike, and not quite a mountain bike. It's a gravel bike built around exploration, and it's genuinely one of the most capable machines in its category.
If you're familiar with Merida bikes, you'll know the brand doesn't tend to overclaim. So when they point out that Matej Mohoric won the 2023 Gravel World Championships on a Silex, a week before the bike even officially launched, that says plenty about what it's capable of.
What makes the Silex different
Rather than adapting an existing road or cyclocross frame, Merida started from scratch with modern MTB-inspired geometry. Long top and head tubes combined with a short stem give the Merida Silex road bike a confident, nimble feel off-road that you simply don't get from a converted road frame. The second-generation version also runs a revised fork design, meaning you can swap to a suspension fork down the line without it throwing the geometry off.
Worth noting that while gravel riding has split into racing and adventure disciplines, Merida has handed the racing brief to their Mission platform. The Silex 9000 stays focused on exploration and longer mixed-terrain riding, which actually makes it a more useful bike for most people in the UK.
Carrying capacity
All Silex frames come with five sets of bottle bosses, and the aluminium frame includes rack mounting points for anyone planning to tour or commute loaded up. Internally routed dropper posts and dynamo systems are also supported, which is a genuinely thoughtful touch for a bike at this level.
Brakes
Every Merida Silex 9000 model (above the 200) runs hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors, flat-mounted on the chainstay for a cleaner fit and better distribution of braking forces. On carbon models, CNC'd aluminium Disc Cooler fins on the calipers bring operating temperatures down by up to 35%. When you're descending fully loaded on a long day out, that's not a minor detail.
The Merida Silex 9000 is available for sale in the UK in Halo Green/Silver Green.
