There's a certain kind of rider who sees a track peeling off into the trees and wants to know where it goes. If that's you, the Merida Silex 9000 is built for exactly that itch, loaded up, off the beaten path, further than you'd normally dare on a road-ish bike. This is a gravel bike made for exploring, not for chasing a number.
Worth saying, though: exploring doesn't mean slow. Matej Mohoric won the 2023 Gravel World Championships on a Silex, a week before it even launched. So the confidence you feel off-road isn't at the expense of pace.
Handling that settles the nerves off-road
The thing that stops people going further is often the bike feeling twitchy the moment the surface turns loose. Merida built the Silex from the ground up around modern MTB-inspired geometry, rather than tweaking a road or cyclocross frame.
Long top and head tubes with a short stem give you nimble, planted handling when the trail gets rough, so you can look ahead and keep rolling instead of tensing over the bars. This second-generation frame also runs a revised fork, so you can fit a suspension fork later without upsetting how it steers.
Made to carry everything you need
This is where the Silex quietly earns its place on a big day out. Every frame has five sets of bottle bosses, plus rack mounts for a proper load, so you can carry water, tools and kit for a long ride or an overnighter. It'll also run an internally routed dropper post and even dynamo systems, handy when you're out past the point where charging is an option.
Braking you can trust fully loaded
Powerful hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors give you real stopping control on a long, weighted descent. The calipers sit on the chainstay using the flat-mount standard for a neat fit and better heat dissipation, and on carbon models they mount on CNC'd Disc Cooler fins that cut operating temperatures by up to 35%. That matters most exactly when you're loaded and heading downhill for a while.
Who it suits
The Silex 9000 is for riders who value going further and carrying more over shaving seconds, bikepackers, all-day explorers and anyone drawn to the road less travelled. If your goal is gravel racing and outright speed, Merida's Mission platform would suit you better.
But for self-reliant days out where the surface and the distance are unknowns, this sits among the most capable Merida gravel bikes in the UK.
