Flying with your bike shouldn't mean a week of dread beforehand. The Topeak Pakgo EX is built around one idea: pack it up without the usual faff, get to the airport, and arrive at the other end with your bike in the same condition it left.
The shell is 100% Makrolon polycarbonate, which sounds technical but what it means in practice is a hardshell bike box that takes knocks without cracking or flexing under pressure. Airline baggage handlers are not known for their gentleness, and this case doesn't require them to be.
What it's like to use
Where a lot of bike travel cases become awkward trolleys the moment you're off the plane, the Pakgo EX handles more like a piece of luggage. Four 60mm multi-directional wheels let you roll it through the terminal in any direction, and there are carry handles if you need to lift it over a kerb or into a taxi.
Packing is straightforward. Protective sleeves cover the frame tubes and fork blades, and there's a drivetrain cover to stop your cassette and chainring leaving marks on everything else inside. Inner pockets keep small parts and tools together so you're not rummaging when you arrive.
Compatibility, before you buy
This is the most important section to read before adding it to your basket. The Pakgo EX fits bikes with wheelbases up to 112 cm (44 inches), and the rear dropout is compatible with 130 mm and 135 mm quick-release skewers, or 12 mm thru-axles. It is not compatible with 27.5" or 29" wheel bikes, so mountain bikers and gravel riders on larger wheels will need to look elsewhere. It suits road bikes and most bikes in the 700c category well.
The maximum load is 17 kg (37.5 lb), and the case itself weighs around 10.9 kg without covers, or 11.9 kg with all the protective components included. Worth factoring in when you're watching airline baggage allowances.
