Product Description

Whyte Wessex One 2018

The Wessex One is the 1x11 version of Whyte's award winning sportive/endurance carbon road bike.

Tribute to its versatility, the original Whyte Wessex had the distinction of being voted both Sportive & Endurance Bike and Commuting Bike of the Year 2016/17 by

Their verdict: 'What a bike! For grinding out long winter rides with mudguards or tackling summer sportives without, the Wessex is the ideal choice.' See full review.

That review wasn't a one-off. The Wessex also picked up a prestigious European Design Innovation Award 2017. Not bad for a bike in its inaugural year.

Such success encouraged Whyte to develop three versions of the Wessex for season 2017/18.

In ascending price order, these are this Whyte Wessex One, the Wessexand the Wessex SE.

This Whyte Wessex One is built on the same carbon frame and fork as last year's award winner. Then the spec has been tweaked with, for instance, a SRAM Apex 1x11 drivetrain rather than Shimano Ultegra 1x11, to create a more affordable Wessex that barely compromises the bike's performance.

  • Built to classic road bike geometry (73 degree head and seat tube angles) the Multi Monocoque carbon frame has the new standard 142mm rear dropouts with 12mm through axle, which beefs up the rear triangle / rear wheel interface to maximise the bike's acceleration and climbing potential
  • The wider axle also reduces stress on the spokes and helps create a stronger rear wheel
  • Both the frame and fork are built for 12mm-wide thru axle wheels to ensure perfect wheel retention and alignment and thus help eliminate the risk of speed-robbing rotor rub
  • To make it a true 4-seasons bike both frame and fork feature concealed eyelets should you ever want to fit full mudguards (free fitting available on any extras purchased with the bike)
  • Its internal cable routing is especially weatherproofed, plus it's mechanic friendly and easy to work on, thanks to its oversized entry and exit rubber grommets and DOX (drop out exit) port.
  • The SRAM 1x11 drivetrain is the future of simplified wide range gearing - see our blog.
  • The SRAM Apex l levers also operate the neat flat mount hydraulic disc brakes. Why you want hydraulic disc brakes..
  • WTB 700x30c tyres will convince you that wider tyres aren't just more comfortable, they can can be faster too - more on this
  • - especially when the tyres and rims are tubeless ready

Here's how Whyte describe the Wessex One

'When we set about designing this bike, we wanted to create an even simpler version of the Wessex. A 1x11 drive train gives 11 usable gears with no overlaps and utter simplicity.

WTB TCS system tyres and rims give all the advantages of tubeless tyres. The lower pressure creates both comfort and grip to give the security that creates the feeling of confidence in all weather and road conditions.

Hydraulic brakes give one finger control from either the hoods or the drops, this modulation allows for complete control in all situations and weather conditions.'

Maybe the only bike you’ll needReview by Al Perry
I was fascinated by the single front ring set up. I needed to test ride this bike. I initially didn’t think I’d like it. I mean I was a dyed in the wool compact Di2 race bike rider how could a 44 tooth front and 42/10 rear set up possibly appeal. Throw in 30mm tyres (actually measured at 32) and disc brakes and you’ve got the most unlikely road bike set imaginable.

I’m glad to admit that once out on the road I loved the sportive type set up of the Wessex One. The frame is lovely to ride and although the tubeless tyres and wheels weigh 3.5kgs they spin well and soak up the bumps. I rode with a local club group and they were critically fascinated with the set up but doubted I’d hang onto them once the pace got up. Well I did. Yep it took a little more effort from me but the bike was more than up to the task of thrashing along in a fast group. I did get dropped up a steepish climb but the Wessex weighs 21lbs so I’ll forgive it.

I bought the bike and love it. It’s fun to ride and running 4 bar in the tyres is mental, it’s like running a fat bike in comparison to 25mm tyres.

This bike is my first experience of disc brakes and they are a revelation. Braking late, late and then even later into corners while my rim brakes buddies are lagging behind.

The big cassette is certainly eye catching but once you’ve worked out what’s comfortable all the gears are there. It’s more than equivalent to a 50/34 32/11 set up.
Sram Apex is a little agricultural compared to Ultegra Di2 but properly set up its smooth and the double tap single lever set up is intuitive and second nature.

In a word this bike is FUN. At heart it’s a winter bike but stick some lighter wheels and 28mm tyres on it and it’ll run all summer long.

I love it. (Posted on 16/02/2018)
