Whyte Portobello 2019 Flat Bar Road Plus Bike

  • Massive 650b x 47c tyres to smooth out the road chatter
  • Full Shimano Deore 1x10 delivers a wider range of gears makes for an even more versatile Whyte Fast Urban Road Bike

The DNA

Carbon fork
If you want to reduce weight whilst improving comfort, aerodynamics and steering response, upgrading the fork blades from metal to carbon is probably the most profound improvement you can make on a road bike.

Shimano Deore 1x10 Simplified Gear Shifting
Proven on mountain bikes, now crossing over to better quality road bikes, one-by gear shifting comes highly recommended. More on this.

The 11-42 cassette offers a wider range and lower climbing gears than the Whyte Whitechapel's 11-36 cassette.

Tektro Auriga Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Tektro Auriga stoppers deliver single-digit modulated braking - i.e. all it takes is a light squeeze of the lever with a single fingertip to apply each brake. Proven on high-spec mountain bikes over the past decade, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes now feature on better quality urban bikes, such as the Whyte Shoreditch. This makes sense because consistent confidence-inspiring braking is at least as important on the road as it is on the trail.

Why consider a bike with high quality hydraulic disc brakes? See blog.

WTB Horizon 650b x 47c, Tan Wall, Road Plus

  • Describing the Portobello as a Flatbar Road/Plus bike after its 650b x 47c plus-size WTB tyres underlines the notion that, almost always, nothing influences the ride characteristics of a bike more than its tyres
  • The supple, lightweight, folding WTB tyres are so forgiving, you'll be riding this Whyte over kerbs, potholes and cobbles with hardly a care
  • But here's the clever bit - the tyre's rolling circumference (where it makes contact with the road) is no greater than an equivalent 700x28 tyre

Mudguard and Rack Compatible
Custom dropouts enable Whyte to mount the rear hydraulic disc brake caliper inside the rear triangle, making it rack and mudguards compatible. If you want any extras fitted to a Whyte Shoreditch, such as Whyte's matching mudguards, let us know when you order the bike and we will customise the bike to your requirements at no extra labour charge.

How Whyte describe the Portobello
Combining MTB geometry and parts with road bike wheels and tyres has always been the case with the R-7 line up - but the new Plus tyres takes this to a new level. These high-air volume/low-rolling-resistance tyres are perfect for dealing with ‘All Surface’ commutes and rides.

The Portobello features massive 650b x 47c tyres to smooth out the road chatter. These deep profile tyres, give the same rolling diameter as 700c x 28c tyres but the extra air volume make them super comfortable and pinch puncture resistant.

A custom rear dropout mounts the hydraulic disc brake caliper inside the rear triangle, clearing the way for any rack or mudguards that may be required.
