Product Description

Whyte Highgate Compact '17

Boasting a lightweight shock-damping carbon fork and Shimano STEPS power-assistance, the new-for-2017 compact-frame Whyte Highgate takes commuter e-bikes to a new level of sophistication. See our 30-plus reasons to love STEPS Shimano Total Electric Power System blog.

Compact Frame
Compact means that the Highgate's top tube is 20mm shorter than the otherwise identical Whyte Clifton. The resulting shorter reach to the handlebars makes the Highgate a better fit for the majority of women (but not all) and for some guys.

Whyte electric bikes

  • Significantly, Whyte had been considering launching an electric bike for a number of years, but decided to hold off till e-bike technology came of age.
  • The launch of STEPS was the cue for Whyte to create their first e-bike - the Coniston - in 2016.
  • Combining STEPS with Whyte's UK-proof bicycle design ethos has enabled this Cotswolds-based company to create the smoothest-riding and most reliable e-commuter bikes we've ever had the pleasure to offer.

>Whyte Coniston

The Whyte Coniston set the bar for cleaner-designed smoother-operating e-commuter bikes. The Highgate has a similar quality feel but with the following subtle differences.

  • Its more compact frame makes it more suitable for shorter riders.
  • With its lower bottom bracket and shorter wheelbase, the Highgate offers a quicker-steering more road bike-like feel.
  • Upgrading from a metal to a carbon fork is a proven route to creating a more plush, sharper steering bike.
  • The Vittoria Zaffiro Pro 700 x 32c puncture-resistant folding tyres are that bit lighter and faster than the Coniston's 700x35 tyres, while still being good all rounders for tarmac or dirt roads.
  • Although they might not be quite as sophisticated as the Coniston's Shimano brakes, the Highgate's Tektro Auriga brakes offer all the benefits you look for inquality hydraulic disc brakes
  • If you're familiar with Whyte bikes, consider the Highgate as similar to the Whyte Pimlico flatbar road bike.
  • Then it's turbocharged with around £1,500-worth of STEPS e-bike technology to make the bike feel blissfully like you're always riding with a tailwind.
  • Whyte tell us that the Highgate weighs a very light (for an e-bike) 17.5kg - the Coniston weighs 20.5kg.

The benefits of a Shimano Deore 1x10 drivetrain

  • Thanks to its 11-36 tooth 10-speed cassette, you get a really useful range of gears in a simplified format comprising a single shifter, a single gear mech and a single chainring.
  • Doing away with the front derailleur, the LH shifter and one or two chainrings means less weight, less complication and less to go wrong.
  • The beginner will be spared learning about what they have to push or pull on each lever to get into a lower or higher gear.
  • With a single lever, gear shifting becomes immediately more straightforward.
  • Even massively experienced cyclists appreciate this simplicity.
  • No more 'double shifting' to get in the right gear.
  • The Shimano Deore Shadow Plus rear derailleur features a chain stabilising switch and a single tension spring to help prevent chain-slap and dropped chains when riding rough terrain.

More good things about the Whyte Highgate

  • The gear cables are enclosed to cope with varied climes - a fine example of Whyte's 'UK-proof' design ethos.
  • Fitted with an extra sturdy chainstay-mounted kickstand - handy for parking the bike while you grab your key to unlock the battery to recharge it when you get home.

Whyte Custom-drawn Tubing
We believe that Whyte are the only company in the bicycle industry who build every hydroformed aluminium frame with custom drawn tubing. This means that Whyte go to the expense of spec'ing a different tube set for each frame size. Custom tubing is Whyte's guarantee that their frames will be as light as possible in every size.

Whyte Geometry
Whyte are famed for getting their frame geometry just right, to ensure you feel confident and centered on the bike. So it goes with the Whyte Highgate. Its road bike-like seat tube angle (73-74 degrees) positions you over the cranks for maximum pedalling efficiency. Its comparatively shallow 69.5-70 degree head tube angle makes the bike reassuringly stable, especially on dowhills. The happy result is a bicycle that rides like its a natural extension of your limbs.

'Using Shimano's STEPS e-Bike Drive Unit the Highgate is able to take advantage of the pedal assist without compromising the weight distribution and therefore the handling of this compact fit bike.

Our custom built e-Bike frames are loaded with unique design touches and British weatherproof features - such as the forward facing seat slot, continuous outer cables that keep the gear shifts working smoother for longer and optional custom matched mud guards.

The Highgate also features a carbon fork to smooth out the road chatter.

The ride-feel of these e-Bikes is second to none, with a fantastic quality lightweight frame which includes our uniquely shaped rear seat stays for comfort and performance.'
