Whyte G-170 S 2020 Mountain Bike

The Whyte G-170 S 2020 scored the perfect 10 and was named Editor’s Choice by MBR as well as being crowned Best Value MTB in the 2018 Pinkbike awards. Available in the UK from late June 2019, the v2 spec adds RockShox’s new Lyric fork with a Charger 2 damper, an upgraded rear shock and improved brakes to the award-winning mix.

The new Whyte G-170 S 2020 model is loaded with the very latest spec developments in Enduro/Trail bikes, like the new WTB ST i30mm 2.0 rims which further improve the performance the front and rear specific TCS tyres, whilst maintaining neutral handling.

The G-170 platform is designed around the Whyte’s performance-enhancing Optimised Trail Offset geometry which also features the most compact seat-tubes possible on all sizes - meaning riders can choose the size with the reach they prefer, and simply adjust the seat-post to fit.

Key Features

  • SCR is Whyte's Single Chain Ring specific dual suspension frame
  • The beefed up rear triangle is optimized for its SCR (single chain ring) along with SRAM Eagle 1x12 transmission
  • Its SCS Symmetrical Chain Stays and its wider main pivot create an even stronger and more reliably flex-resistant rig
  • SCR translates to you, the rider, as improved cornering confidence and enhanced suspension performance
  • The SCR frame also supports the rear wheel better and boosts its lateral stiffness
  • WTB Vigilante TCS 27.5” X 2.5” Front and WTB Trail Boss G2 TCS 27.5” X 2.4” Rear Tyre on WTB ST i30 TCS rims make it very viable to upgrade to riding tubeless. Why upgrade to tubeless?
  • SRAM Guide GE 4-pot 200mm rotor brake calipers are DH-race proven
  • Guide brakes offer reach-adjustable one-finger control and feature a stainless steel Heat Shield between the pad and caliper body to help ensure consistent stopping power
  • With its smooth-operating bar-mounted Paddle Remote, Whyte's Drop.it II seatpost makes it super easy to adjust the saddle on the move from high enough for efficient climbing to low enough for epic downhilling

The benefits of Whyte's unique MTB trail geometry in their own words
'
We push the front wheel further in front of the rider at a slacker angle to the frame. This helps the steering ‘self correct’, keeping you on track whether you’re ripping down a rowdy mountain trail or a back road short cut turns out shady. By adding a long reach top tube we can team the stable steering with a super short, snap reacting stem for dodging traffic and potholes on the way to work or surfing sliding tyres down a black run descent. Add our own carefully selected handlebar shapes and you’ve got the perfect balanced of confident communication and connection in your hands.

Steering feel alone isn’t enough to create a benchmark setting, award winning handling character though. We also drop the centre of gravity of our bikes as low as possible so they naturally glue themselves onto the ground through corners rather than leaving you perched and precarious. Because driving a barge is dull we keep the back ends super short whatever the wheel size to guarantee the hop and pop agility you need to bring the trail alive.'

Add all the other features that make a Whyte mountain bike special, such as their unique Quad 4 suspension with UK-proof lifetime guaranteed pivot bearings, it's hard to imagine a better trail bike for the money. See our Why we’re in love with Whyte mountain bikes blog
