Whyte Coniston 2019 Electric Bike

2019 brings the Shimano STEPS e5000 power-assisted Coniston which has been our deserved best selling electric commuter bike since its introduction in 2016.

See our 30-plus reasons to love STEPS Shimano Total Electric Power System blog.

Shimano STEPS e5000 drive unit

The Shimano STEPS e5000 drive unit is new for 2019 and puts another step forward in e-bike drive units! This is Shimano’s hybrid/trekking motor that drops in weight for 2019 to around 2.7kg (3.2kg e6000) and offers up to 40Nm of torque which makes the delivery of assistance even smoother.

Whyte electric bikes

  • Significantly, Whyte had been considering launching an electric bike for a number of years, but decided to hold off till e-bike technology came of age
  • The launch of STEPS was the cue for Whyte to create the Coniston, their first e-bike, in 2016
  • Combining STEPS with Whyte's UK-proof bicycle design ethos has enabled this Cotswolds-based company to create one of the smoothest-riding and most reliable e-commuter bikes we've ever had the pleasure to offer
  • The Coniston looks and rides like Whyte's tried-and-tested, dirt road capable, All Terrain commuter bike with suspension forks - the Caledonian
  • Then it's turbocharged with around £1,500-worth of STEPS e-bike technology so the bike feels blissfully like you're always riding with a tailwind
  • The fact that the Coniston looks like (but rides much easier than) a regular quality Whyte bicycle means that the Coniston works for a younger demographic than first generation e-bikes>

More good things about the Whyte Coniston

  • A fantastic range of 10 gears via its Shimano Deore Shifter, rear mech and 11-34 cassette in a bang up to the minute 1x10 format - why this is good
  • Shimano hydraulic disc brakes are a by-word for reliable performance. Why you want a bike with quality hydraulic disc brakes
  • The gear cables are enclosed to cope with varied climes - a fine example of Whyte's 'UK-proof' design ethos
  • Schwalbe Silento 700 x 35c, with K-Guard Puncture Protection tyres with Double Shielding puncture protection zip along the tarmac yet offer superior grip when you take an off-road detour
  • Eyelets and clearance make the Coniston rack and mudguard compatible
  • If you would like us to fit anything to a Coniston, just ask when you order the bike and we'll waive the normal fitting charge
  • Fitted with an extra sturdy chainstay-mounted kickstand - handy for parking the bike while you grab your key to unlock the battery to recharge it when you get home

Whyte Custom-drawn Tubing

We believe that Whyte are the only company in the bicycle industry who build every hydroformed aluminium frame with custom drawn tubing. This means that Whyte go to the expense of spec'ing a different tube set for each frame size. Custom tubing is Whyte's guarantee that their frames will be as light as possible in every size.

Whyte Geometry

Whyte are famed for getting their frame geometry just right, to ensure you feel confident and centred on the bike. So it goes with the Whyte Coniston. Its road bike-like seat tube angle (73-74 degrees) positions you over the cranks for maximum pedalling efficiency. Its comparatively shallow 69.5-70 degree head tube angle makes the bike reassuringly stable, especially on downhills. The happy result is a bicycle that rides like its a natural extension of your limbs.

'Using Shimano’s STEPS e-Bike Drive Unit the Coniston is able to take advantage of the pedal assist without compromising the weight distribution and therefore the handling.

The ride-feel of these e-Bikes is second to none, with a fantastic quality lightweight frame which includes our uniquely shaped rear seat stays for comfort and performance, plus Whyte’s very own take on All Terrain geometry.

Our custom built e-Bike frames are loaded with unique design touches and British weatherproof features - such as the forward facing seat slot, continuous outer cables that keep the gear shifts working smoother for longer and optional custom matched mudguards.'
