Whyte Caledonian 2018

The best bike in Whyte's All Terrain range, this commuter/hybrid bike's suspension fork and hydraulic brakes make the Caledonian fit for off-road exploring.

'All Terrain' refers to Whyte's aim to create a 'do anything' bike that will perform on road and delight off road. The Caledonian concept is all about creating a bike that you can confidently enjoy whether you're on the road, an unpaved cycle track or the green routes at your local trail centre.

If you want one bicycle that does it all, a Whyte Caledonian is a great place to start.

  • The hydroformed aluminium frame is as gorgeous as we have come to expect from Whyte
  • Check the custom dropout which positions the Shimano disc brake caliper inside the rear triangle so it doesn’t preclude fitting a regular rear rack
  • The gear cables are enclosed to cope with varied climes - a fine example of Whyte's 'UK-proof' design ethos
  • The SunTour fork's 63mm suspension helps smooth rough terrain, and can be locked out when rough descents make way for smooth climbs
  • Vittoria Randonneur Trail 700x35 tyres with Double Shielding puncture protection zip along the tarmac yet offer good grip when you take an off-road detour
  • The Shimano Deore/LX 3x10 transmission delivers a super wide range of gears and precise gear shifting
  • Shimano BR-M447 hydraulic disc brakes deliver single-digit modulated braking - i.e. all it takes is a light squeeze of the lever with a single fingertip to apply each brake
  • Why you want hydraulic disc brakes
  • See also technically identical women's versionwith innovative partially dropped frame.

Whyte Custom-drawn Tubing
We believe that Whyte are the only company in the bicycle industry who build every one of their hydroformed aluminium frames with custom drawn tubing. This means that Whyte go to the expense of spec'ing a different tube set for each frame size. Custom tubing is Whyte's guarantee that their frames will be as light as possible in every size.

Whyte Geometry
Whyte are famed for getting their frame geometry just right, to ensure you feel confident and centered on the bike. So it goes with the Whyte Caledonian. Its road bike-like seat tube angle (73.5-74.5 degrees) positions you over the cranks for maximum pedalling efficiency. Its shallow 69 degree head tube angle makes the bike reassuringly stable, especially on downhills. The happy result is a bicycle that rides like its a natural extension of your limbs.

Here's how Whyte describe the Caledonian

'With wide ratio gearing taken from Shimano's rugged mountain bike line and high quality Vittoria trail tyres, the Caledonian is primed for a big adventure.

Our custom built frames are loaded with unique design touches and British weatherproof features - such as the forward facing seat slot that stops water spray from the rear wheel getting into the frame and the continuous outer cables that keep the gear shifts working smoother for longer.

The ride-feel of these bikes is second to none, with a fantastic quality lightweight frame including our unique rear seat stays which really improve the comfort and performance, whatever the terrain.'
