Specialized Sequoia Merz 2017

With only 200 of these bicycles being built, the Specialized Sequoia Merz is indeed one very special edition version of an impeccable adventure touring bike.

Jim Merz made his name as a highly skilled American frame builder in the 1970s. That's why Specialized head-hunted Jim in 1982. His brief was to design Specialized's road and track bikes in general, and that decade's version of the Sequoia touring bike in particular.

After a long absence to pursue other projects Jim recently returned to Specialized to take on the role of master frame builder.

Jim now works with current Specialized frame designer Erik Nohlin (the man who introduced 21st century upgrades such as carbon forks, SRAM 1x11 gear shifting and hydraulic disc brakes to the Sequoia) to create this limited edition version with the following unique features:

  • The stainless steel chainstay will make you wonder why every rear triangle doesn't have this feature (we're sure cost might be a factor)
  • Heat-treated custom-butted Premium Cr-Mo frame tubing (apart from the stainless steel RH chainstay) maintains the Sequoia's legendary riding feel and authenticity
  • Classic fast-touring bike geometry (73.5 degree seat tube / 71.5 degree head tube angles on 56cm frame) proven on 4 decades of Sequoia bicycles
  • The made-in-Seattle Swift Industries saddle tool roll continues the Americana handcrafted theme
  • Full SRAM 1x11 drivetrain - why this is good
  • The headtube badge of each Specialized Sequoia Merz is engraved with the bike's unique number
  • The paint job is a tribute to one of the first bikes Jim built, which was painted Valencia orange by his then wife, Virginia Church
  • Forgetting what a phone company once claimed, this frame will have you agreeing that the future is indeed orange
  • The tan saddle, bar tape and tyre sidewalls match the paint job perfectly

This Specialized Sequoia Merz builds on the strong foundations laid by the standard Specialized Sequoia Expert 2017.

This is how we described it.

The Sequoia was the first bike Specialized ever made in the late '70s.

With its carbon fork with massive tyre/mudguard clearance, its handbuilt thru-axle wheels, its internal cable routing, its flat mount SRAM hydraulic disc brakes, its rack mounts and its hidden mudguard mounts, Specialized have taken a classic bike and brought it bang up to the minute.

With its custom gauge CrMo frame built with clearance for its 700x42 tyres, the 2017 Sequoia crosses over beautifully from road to touring to adventure to sportive to cross, making it possibly the ultimate do-anything drop bar bike.

This is how Specialized describe this Merz edition version of the Sequoia

Jim Merz is a legendary frame builder, so it should stand to reason that any frame bearing his name has to be, well, legendary in its own right. We were up to the challenge, but we thought it would just be easier to ask him to help us construct the Sequoia Merz Edition.

Each bike will be hand-numbered and only produced one time, starting this spring. It features a Pro-level frameset in an Expert build, with an exposed brushed stainless chainstay and custom colors/graphics that tie back to the heritage of Merz Bicycles.

Meanwhile, the stem, seat clamp, and Cruzero wheels are all custom anodized in a warm grey.

And lastly, each bike will come with a Swift Industries saddle tool roll that's been custom-made in Seattle.

  • The Sequoia is built from our Premium Cr-Mo, size-specific tubing. This ensures that every frame is strong, light, and capable, while every frame size rides exactly as we intended
  • This philosophy is furthered with our Adventure Geometry that provides ample confidence over rough and smooth terrain, alike
  • And lastly, we equipped this frame with fender & rack mounts to make sure you'll be well equipped whenever adventure strikes
  • A beefy FACT carbon fibre fork is sure to take the sting out of harsh roads. And when you're deep into said roads, you'll be thankful for the extra water bottle mount found on its fork leg
  • Hand-built Adventure Gear Cruzero wheels are cased in 700x42mm 2Bliss Ready tires to be tough, strong, and fast rolling
  • It's the ideal wheelset for anyone looking to skip town at speed
