Specialized Ariel Mechanical Disc Step Through Hybrid Bike

This is the women's step-through (open frame) version of the Specialized Ariel commuter hybrid bike with suspension forks and disc brakes to make it more than capable on light trails.

Specialized Ariel Overview
When Specialized introduced their women's Ariel and unisex Crosstrail ranges of trail capable commuter bikes in 2008 they created a genre - much as Specialized have done throughout their history (think Specialized Stumpjumper mountain bike or Roubaix sportive road bike).

As is the Specialized way, the Ariel concept has evolved and been refined, so models are better designed with features borrowed from their finest four-figure road and and mountain bikes, such as:

  • Its confidence-inspiring perfectly aligned Specialized A1 premium aluminum frame will be among the lightest at its price point
  • Internal gear cable routing makes for a cleaner finish that accentuates the frame's gorgeous paint job
  • The flat-disc brake mounts are much neater and lighter weight than first-generation disc brake frame bosses

For all these improvements, every Ariel bike lives up to Specialized's original ambition - that is to create a trail-capable commuter bike.

  • To this end, every Ariel rolls on 700x38 tyres from one of the world's most respected bicycle tyre companies - Specialized
  • These tyres are faster than off-road knobblies and more forgiving than 23-28mm-wide road bike tyres
  • Pannier rack and mudguard compatibility make an Ariel perfect for commuting, touring and general riding
  • Free fitting - order mudguards or anything else with a new bike and we'll waive our usual fitting charge
  • The suspension fork offers shock absorption that helps make the bike suitable for light trail riding
  • Brain technology means the fork's 60mm travel is only active when required and is automatically locked out for rigid fork-like efficiency on smooth roads
  • Disc Brakes - moving the brakes from the mud and rain-attracting wheel rims to the relatively clean hubs makes for an improvement in the brakes’ all-weather all-conditions performance
  • Disc brake pads are much harder so they last much longer
  • That's why disc brakes tend to need far less maintenance compared with rim brakes - they don't require such frequent adjustment to compensate for brake pad wear
  • The wheel rims will almost certainly last much longer too now that they are no longer being worn down by the brake pads
  • To illustrate the extra care Specialized take, they get the smallest details just right. For instance, the Ariel Mechanical Disc's wheel rims are double wall and the rear freehub takes a cassette rather than a freewheel to help ensure greater strength and longevity
  • Even the chain is specially selected for its anti-corrosion coating to help ensure minimum maintenance and maximum service life for its wide-range Shimano 3x7 drivetrain.

It's little wonder that Ariel bikes have been consistent best sellers since their introduction. If you are looking for a women's geometry bike that works well over the widest spectrum of conditions, a Specialized Ariel is well worth considering.
