This handsome 26-wheeled hybrid comes equipped with Shimano Nexus 8-speed internal hub gears and brakes. Nexus Inter-8 marries the low-maintenance convenience of the traditional internal hub gear with the wide-geared hill-flattening range of the modern mountain bike. In developing Nexus Inter-8, Shimano did a lot more than add an extra gear to their previous best, the Inter-7. The weathersealing has been improved, the drag reduced, and the gear spread widened - its now equivalent to a 12-38 cassette (Inter-7 was 13-32).
\As for the Nexus hub brakes, I could do no better than quote Richard Ballantines 21st Century Bicycle Book, Where hub brakes shine is on utility bikes. Theyve got a nice, smooth action, enough power for urban conditions, and wont go piffle in the wet. At the time of writing, the only one worth considering is the Shimano Nexus.
With gears and brakes enclosed in the hub, and thus protected from corrosive weathering, Nexus heralds a new generation of city bikes with reliability and longevity built in. Maybe thats why this bike is so named. It could herald the Nemesis of less appropriately-equipped machines.
