The Explorer K line is Ridgeback's take on ATBs for the city along the lines of the Specialized Expedition and the Edinburgh Courier - ie it's built on a dependable ATB frame with 26” ATB wheels but the tyres are semi slick, not knobbly, so more suited for the street.
The Ridgeback Explorer K3's frame offers a Chromoly steel alternative to those 2 aforementioned aluminium bikes. Narrower gauge steel tubes contribute to the lean stripped-down look of the bike. If lean stripped down isn't you, there's nothing to stop you equipping the bike with mudguards and a rack. Also, being an ATB frame, you can always fit knobbly tyres in future.
If you like to ride hard in the big ring, you might be interested to learn that the Explorer K3 has a 48t chainring - not the usual 42t big ring. Shimano EZ Fire push button gears, V-brakes with Shimano levers, and an Ozone saddle on a suspension seatpin complete a super spec that combines ease-of-use with reliable performance.
The Explorer K3 is this year's version of the Ridgeback Omega which received the following 'Best on Test' review in the October 2000 edition of On Your Bike magazine. 'The Ridgeback Omega takes the honours with its springy steel frame and wide tyres that damp the the trail, a subtle finish worthy of a bike twice the price, and a relaxed riding position which is just stretched enough to allow you to stand on the pedals and absorb the bigger bumps. You could easily ride this bike to work from Monday to Friday, then fit better tyres and pedals to have off-road fun at the weekend too. The perfect all rounder.'
