Marin Lombard 2017

With its archetypal tasteful Marin finish, the Lombard is an especially striking example of the cross / commuter / all-rounder road bike

Cyclocross-style bikes like this are getting more and more popular every year. This popularity is down to the sheer utility of owning a fast road bike made more versatile, courtesy of its fat and forgiving Schwalbe puncture-resistant 700x35 tyres, its disc brakes and its mudguard and rack compatibility.

  • Series 3 6061 disc brake frames utilize butted aluminum tubing with upgraded seatstays and SHOT Tech to minimize weight and maximize strength and stiffness
  • 'Urban road geometry' - the 56cm frame has classic road 72.5 degree head tube angle and 73.5 degree seat tube angle, but with a taller head tube (165cm) to create a fast engaging road bike-like ride, which is slightly more upright than classic road race geometry
  • Frame details include 3D forged dropouts with integrated post mount disc brake mounts for secure wheel and brake calliper mounting; a rear-mounted kickstand attachment, and dual eyelets for quick and easy mudguard and rack mounting
  • Drop handlebars once again prove themselves as the ultimate multi-position bars
  • Marin Compact bars make for easy transition from bar top to hoods to drops
  • Smooth shifting, wide range Shimano Sora 3x9 gearing, utilizing Shimano Sora Hollowtech II 50/39/30t cranks and Sora derailleurs, help you climb the steepest of hills without sacrificing speed when you sprint on the flats
  • Disc Brake reliability

Disc Brakes on a Road Bike?
Proven for over a decade on mountain bikes and better quality hybrids, the benefits of disc brakes are now becoming more and more recognised on road bikes. Moving the brakes from the mud and rain-attracting wheel rims to the relatively clean hubs makes for an improvement in the brakes’ all-weather all-conditions performance. Disc brake pads are much harder so they last much longer. That's why disc brakes tend to need far less maintenance compared with rim brakes - they don't require such frequent adjustment to compensate for brake pad wear. The wheel rims should also last much longer now that they are no longer being worn down by the brake pads.

Cyclocross bikes
Cross bikes are inspired by cyclocross: a century-old sport pioneered by roadies who fitted wider, more knobbly tyres (but not as fat as a mountain bike’s) to their road bikes for cross-country racing. Cross bikes typically boasts 700x35 tyres on a lightweight 7005 aluminium alloy road frame with mudguard/rack eyelets. The result is a fast all-weather bike that can handle off-road excursions.

  • With its wider grippier tyres and its wider range of gears, a cross bike will thrive in situations where a racing bike might struggle: for instance on rutted uphill paths when you take a scenic off-road detour on your commute home
  • Clearance for full mudguards - and mud - and eyelets for front and rear racks means that a cross bike readily doubles as a fast touring / commuter bike
  • You could commute, tour, enter a cyclocross race or swoop round an MTB trail centre green route on a cross bike. Such versatility makes the cross an ideal all-purpose bike if you prefer drop bars to flat

'Marin Lombard Range
Part adventure bike, and part urban warrior. Birthed from cyclocross and touring parents, the Lombard can tackle the weekly commute as well as stretch its legs to venture out on weekend road or gravel adventures. A Shimano Sora triple 27-speed drivetrain with wide-range gearing help reduce the strain of hills while mixed-tread Schwalbe Delta Cruiser tyres provide secure handling both on road and off. Promax Render R disc brakes provide all-weather performance and a unique reflective decal system on the frame helps keep you visible while riding at night.'
