You can get 35-70 miles out of a single charge, depending on how heavy you are and how much effort you put in, and it takes about 4 hours to charge a battery. But there are a lot of terrible electric bikes out there with terrible motors, which is why we only stock the best. With the battery still on the frame, the bike weighs about 20 kilos and you feel it. This has happened to me on my Whyte Coniston exactly twice when I forgot to charge up the battery, and I was beyond sweaty when I got to work.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s no reason you\u2019d want to \u201cgo acoustic\u201d on an electric bike, because that\u2019s not what they\u2019re designed for. You wouldn\u2019t buy an electric guitar and then complain that it sounds rubbish with the power switched off.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2025\/04\/1816_1599_4831_b18-whyte-clifton-2018.jpg\" alt=\"b18-whyte-clifton-2018.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"image-caption\"><em> The Whyte Clifton 2018: Easy on the eyes and easy on the legs. <\/em><\/span><\/h5>\n<h3>There&#8217;s a lot of crap out there.<\/h3>\n<p>Michael, our bike buyer, works extremely hard to bring in the absolute best bikes he can for the money, instead of trying to offer customers the cheapest thing he can find \u2013 and believe us, there\u2019s plenty of that out around.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we only stock reputable brands such as Whyte (Britain\u2019s own), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/giant\/electric-bikes\"> Giant\u00a0electric bikes <\/a> (world&#8217;s biggest bike manufacturer),\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/specialized\/electric-bikes\"> Specialized <\/a> (international experts), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/kalkhoff\"> Kalkhoff <\/a> (urban cool) and women&#8217;s specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/liv\/electric-bikes\"> Liv e bike <\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>These brands not only make excellent non-electric bikes, they also take the technology seriously. Whyte uses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/blog\/shimano-steps-e-bike-system\"> Shimano Steps System <\/a> , Specialized uses the highly-regarded Brose system, and Giant use the Yamaha system (the motorbike people!)<\/p>\n<p>All of the big companies such as Bosch, Shimano and Brose will always have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/components\/electronics\"> spare electric bike batteries and chargers <\/a> available.<\/p>\n<p>That means the motors are dependable, easy to fix and easy to find replacement parts for. The motor is also integrated into the bicycle frame, as opposed to being \u201cstuck on\u201d as an afterthought.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the bikes from these brands also tend to be lighter than their cheaper counterparts.<\/p>\n<h3>Why don\u2019t I spend all that money on an expensive road bike instead?<\/h3>\n<p>An expensive road bike rides like a dream. But no matter how expensive a non-electric bike is, you\u2019ll always work a lot harder going uphill than you would on an electric bike. Gravity has the upper hand on this one.<\/p>\n<h3>Why don\u2019t I use one of those DIY electric bike kits? <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2025\/04\/7216_1599_4832_r5-disc-ultegra-di2.jpg\" alt=\"r5-disc-ultegra-di2.jpg\" \/><\/h3>\n<p>Because they don\u2019t work as well, you have to put them together yourself, and there\u2019s no guarantees. Some of them also allow you to go at dangerous speeds which are illegal on an electric bike.
