Telling statistics made the case that investing in organized sport mostly benefitted people who would get into sport anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The programme\u2019s verdict was that the best way to improve the health and fitness of a significant number is to encourage and invest in active travel to make it easier and safer for more people to walk and to cycle.<\/p>\n<p>For most of us at the Bicycle Co-op, getting around on our bicycles comes as naturally as taking breath. When riding a bike becomes second nature it\u2019s easy to take the benefits of cycling for granted.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2025\/04\/1616_2401_9446_ridiculous-exercise-ball.jpeg\" alt=\"ridiculous-exercise-ball.jpeg\" \/> This inspired us to have a quick brainstorm to list a dozen reasons why cycling is almost always very good for you.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Passive exercise \u2013 when cycling is part of your everyday life for general getting around, you don\u2019t have to make a conscious effort and make time to enjoy the benefits of regular exercise.<\/li>\n<li>Brave heart \u2013 Your heart is a muscle. You have to exercise to keep it strong. Cycling strengthens the cardiovascular system.<\/li>\n<li>This helps explain why, everything else being equal, an adult who cycles regularly enjoys the same level of &amp;filig;tness as a non-cyclist who is 10 years younger.<\/li>\n<li>Fresh air \u2013 whenever you jump on the saddle rather than into the car, you\u2019ll be part of the solution to reducing pollution \u2013 and not part of the cause.<\/li>\n<li>Young at heart \u2013 chances are you\u2019ll look younger, you\u2019ll be less likely to fall ill and you\u2019ll live longer than your non-cycling contemporaries.<\/li>\n<li>Stay trim \u2013 cycling can help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight as shown by Edinburgh University Professor Chris Oliver\u00a0who gives talks on how cycling helped him drop his weight from 27 to 15 stone.<\/li>\n<li>Feed your head.\u00a0 <em> \u2018E=mc2: I thought of that while riding my bike.\u2019 <\/em> \u00a0Albert Einstein.<\/li>\n<li>Sleep well \u2013 regular cycling exposes you to daylight and helps regulate your circadian rhythm (AKA biological clock) so it helps prevent insomnia.<\/li>\n<li>Arrive on time \u2013 virtually immune to delays, congestion and parking hassles, a bike will almost always get you to your destination within a predictable time frame. Further proof that cycling helps reduce stress.<\/li>\n<li>But isn\u2019t cycling dangerous? Sure it can be \u2013 like any human activity (or inactivity). Yet statistically speaking, you\u2019re more likely to get injured playing tennis or gardening than you are riding a bike.<\/li>\n<li>Natural high \u2013 exercising flushes the brain with endorphins \u2013 nature\u2019s happy hormones.<\/li>\n<li>The gift that keeps on giving \u2013 the fact that a bike is a great way to get out into the world makes cycling a relatively safe addiction, which you\u2019re less likely to tire of than more prosaic forms of exercise, such as\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"blog-entry-social-media\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"blog-entry-tags\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For most of us here, getting around on our bicycles comes as naturally as taking breath.
