But they can be. Especially with our discounted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/onsale\"> bike sales <\/a> section where you can pick up massive discounts on bikes including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/giant\/onsale\">Giant bike sale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many people who are new to cycling are horrified at the thought of a \u00a31,000 bicycle, and usually say something along the lines of: \u201cYou can buy a car\/motorbike\/one-bedroom flat for that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this may be true, you can\u2019t buy <em> a really nice, brand new <\/em> car for \u00a31,000.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a3150 is expensive<\/h2>\n<p>Relative to a bag of crisps, yes; \u00a3150 is expensive. But consider for a moment some of the ways you want a bicycle to perform:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You want to be able to ride it uphill without fainting from exhaustion, so it has to be strong without being too heavy<\/li>\n<li>You want to be able to go over bumps without the frame crumpling in two, so the frame has to have some flex as well as being strong and light<\/li>\n<li>You want the gears to change when you tell them to, which involves a not-uncomplicated set up of levers, cables and springs<\/li>\n<li>You want your drivetrain (pedals, chain, gears) to be able to withstand considerable force from your legs without exploding<\/li>\n<li>You want everything to be waterproof, because it rains<\/li>\n<li>You want a choice of sizes and sizings such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/male\"> bicycles for men<\/a>, unisex bikes and women&#8217;s bikes.<\/li>\n<li>You want your brakes to function well even when wet, potentially to save your life<\/li>\n<li>And you want your bike to do all of the above, reliably, for hundreds or thousands of miles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of this requires carefully engineered and properly manufactured components, which requires manufacturers to pay for decent materials, labour costs, research &amp; development, and so on. Just like creating any other machine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2025\/04\/5516_1597_7921_russia-love-2-crap-bike.jpg\" alt=\"russia-love-2-crap-bike.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"image-caption\"> You get what you pay for. <\/span><\/h5>\n<h2>A decent entry-level bike will cost \u00a3300 new<\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s just the way it is, and if you think that someone along the way is making a killing, you\u2019re mistaken. For a bicycle retailer, the profit margin for selling a new bicycle could be as little as 8%. That\u2019s \u00a324 on a \u00a3300 bike.<\/p>\n<p>Bear in mind that for \u00a3150 you will usually be able to find something resembling a new bicycle \u2013 maybe from a supermarket &#8211; but it will not be a pleasant ride. It also won\u2019t last long, you\u2019ll probably have to assemble it yourself, and heaven help you if you\u2019ve got to bring it back to, say, ASDA or ALDI for advice if it doesn\u2019t work properly.<\/p>\n<h2>Why is a Ferrari so expensive?<\/h2>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2025\/04\/8516_1597_7922_shop-view.jpg\" alt=\"shop-view.jpg\" width=\"379\" height=\"232\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>A \u00a3200,000 Ferrari and an \u00a38,000 Kia Picanto do the same thing, on the face of it. They move forward, they turn corners, they brake. Now consider what it feels like to drive a Ferrari, compared to a Kia.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true of a bicycle. The look, the feel, the entire experience of riding a \u00a32,000 bike is completely different from riding a \u00a3150 bike. Pedalling, changing gears, braking, even carrying it up stairs, is all effortless in comparison. Performance-wise, you can reach much higher speeds, and the bike responds with lightning speed to your every command. Which feels great. And your cyclist friends will think you\u2019re even cooler than before.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2025\/04\/8716_1597_7920_cervelo-s3-disc-ultegra-di2-17-jpg.jpg\" alt=\"cervelo-s3-disc-ultegra-di2-17-jpg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now consider this: A cheap Ferrari is 25 times more expensive than a new Kia (\u00a3200k compared to \u00a38k.) Meanwhile a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/bikes\/road-bikes\"> pro-level bicycle <\/a> is only 10 times more expensive than a decent entry-level bicycle (\u00a33k compared to \u00a3300.) That is to say, the Ferrari of bicycles is only 10 times more expensive than the Kia of bicycles.<\/p>\n<p>Even a super-elite pro-level Cervelo S3 Disc Ultegra Di2 at around \u00a36k is still only 21 times more expensive than an entry-level bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>But enough talk of Ferrari-level bicycles.
