Rob Greenland runs Leeds-based social enterprise Zero Waste Leeds and took a demo Kalkhoff Endeavour 1.B Move\u00a0electric bike out for a couple of days. Here are his first impressions:<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s probably happened to all of us.\u00a0 You\u2019re quietly minding your business, steadily climbing a hill.\u00a0 And then out of nowhere someone passes you. Effortlessly pedalling, whilst you\u2019re digging in.\u00a0 They\u2019re past you in no time.<\/p>\n

The first few times it happened to me, it was noticeable because it was rare. Not any more.\u00a0 Whereas I might have seen one or two people a week on electric bikes a couple of years ago, I now tend to see 3 or 4 a day.<\/p>\n

First Impressions<\/h2>\n

What\u2019s all the fuss about electric bikes<\/a>?\u00a0 Only one way to find out.<\/p>\n

\"kalkhoff-parked.jpeg\" I picked up a Kalkhoff Endeavour 1.B Move electric bike from my local Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative on a January Sunday afternoon.\u00a0 And off I went.\u00a0 Straight to the biggest hill I could find, naturally.\u00a0 I pressed the button to go to Turbo mode.\u00a0 And I slowly ground to a halt – as I hadn\u2019t cottoned on to the fact that gears – nine of them on this bike – still matter.\u00a0 I turned back down the hill, got into a lower gear, and set off up the hill again. I zoomed up.\u00a0 And my love affair with the e-bike began.<\/p>\n

I live in Leeds – it\u2019s not the hilliest place in the world but there\u2019s pretty much always an incline wherever you go.\u00a0 Enough to put a lot of people off cycling.\u00a0 And that is very much the beauty of the e-bike.\u00a0\u00a0 It genuinely flattened out my journeys – so even the most difficult of hills felt pretty much effortless.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

After my initial hill-fail, I soon got the hang of it.\u00a0 It\u2019s all very simple – just one button to press and four different modes of pedal assist – depending on how much assistance you feel you need.\u00a0 I found myself mostly in Eco – which as you\u2019d imagine will help to extend the range – and I went up to Turbo for that extra bit of oomph on hillier sections.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to switch between modes, and as the assistance kicks in it offers a noticeable but smooth boost rather than a jolt.<\/p>\n

What I Use My Bike For<\/h2>\n

I mostly ride a bike for work and for getting around Leeds.\u00a0 The real test of the bike was always going to be whether I could turn up for a meeting – in my normal clothes – without breaking a sweat.\u00a0 And the bike 100% passed that test.\u00a0 That for me is a game changer – as I do get a bit fed up having to have a change of clothes or needing ten minutes to cool down before I go into a meeting.<\/p>\n

\"kalkhoff-banner.jpeg\" Alongside commuting, my main other use for my bike is shopping.\u00a0 Again, it performed well, easily (on a higher power mode) coping with the extra weight of a couple of full panniers.\u00a0 On the downside, that was a time when I became more aware of the bike\u2019s weight, as I wheeled it through a tight spot in the supermarket car park.\u00a0 The extra weight of an e-bike can feel a bit cumbersome, when you\u2019re handling it yourself, rather than riding it.<\/p>\n

I felt more conscious about the bike\u2019s security whilst I was out and about.\u00a0 My much loved and well-ridden Revolution Courier doesn\u2019t look that attractive to thieves these days, whilst this lovely e-bike certainly caught the eye.\u00a0 That\u2019s less of an issue if your journey is from home to a workplace with secure bike parking – but it would be something I\u2019d need to consider for the journeys I make around town.<\/p>\n

Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n

Seventy-two hours later, I handed the bike back.\u00a0 I pretty much knew I\u2019d love it, as I\u2019d had so many conversations with e-bike evangelists in recent months.\u00a0 And it didn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n

For now, I\u2019ll be sticking with my Courier.\u00a0 For a few reasons – one being that I can\u2019t justify the cost at the moment – and the other being that on balance I do like the extra effort that I have to put in on an unassisted ride – at least for now.<\/p>\n

But I have no doubt that in the next few years I\u2019ll be making a switch to one of the best electric bikes UK<\/a>.\u00a0 Having spoken with several e-bike owners, I\u2019m sold on what people say about it being more of a car replacement than a \u201cnormal\u201d bike replacement.\u00a0 I can totally see how people who would never see themselves on a conventional bike would happily ride an e-bike – if there were decent, safe routes for them to get from A to B.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s what excites me about e-bikes.\u00a0 Combined with investment in networks of protected cycle lanes, I think they could offer a real alternative to cars for lots of our journeys in cities.\u00a0 That\u2019s something that could bring all sorts of benefits.”<\/p>\n

Kalkhoff Endeavour 1.B Move 2022 version<\/h2>\n

The new version of the Kalkhoff Endeavour 1.B Move comes with a 400 or a 500w\/h battery and the Bosch performance line motor for 65n\/m of torque – plenty, for most hills you will face. Included in the price are the mudguards, rear rack and front and rear light. The battery is mounted centrally on the down tube for balance and control and Kalkhoff bikes are renowned for their excellent straight line stability. Hydraulic disc brakes are fitted for great stopping power in all conditions. Practical features and for riding comfort, Kalkhoff bikes are fitted with an adjustable stem so they can be adjusted to individual preference or if you would like a more upright riding position.<\/p>\n

The Kalkhoff Endeavour are classed as a trekking bike which means they will be great on tarmac but will also deal well with light off road riding whether that is the daily commute or leisure rides in or out of the city.<\/p>\n
