And to make it even more challenging for himself, he\u2019s chosen to do it all on a singlespeed bike.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 600px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghbicycle.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2025\/04\/3316_2384_3211_thailand.jpg\" alt=\"thailand.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" \/> \u201cMy\u00a0appetite\u00a0for simplicity and endurance has been steadily developing over the last five\u00a0years,\u201d says Markus. \u201cI cycled Land\u2019s End to John o\u2019 Groats, as well as lots of other really challenging routes all in one gear on a bike worth less than \u00a31000. A singlespeed gives me simplicity and durability. Why switch back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far he\u2019s cycled through Scotland, England, France, Spain, Iceland, the USA, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia, and at the end of August he\u2019ll finish up back where he started in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>The 36 year old German has called Edinburgh his home since 2009. He planned the 240km round-the-world trail himself, and gave it the name \u2018The Capital Trail\u2019, since it starts and finishes at Portobello beach, Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>We were extremely happy to help Markus in making the final adjustments to his bike, carried out by Edinburgh Canonmills Co-op mechanic Dougie.
