Bruntsfield shop mechanic Gordon\u2019s bicycle maintenance tips<\/a> went down really well last week, so we asked him which tools he packed every ride.<\/p>\n

Gordon recommended:<\/p>\n

  1. Tyre levers\u00a0like these: Help remove your tyre if (when) you get a puncture.<\/li>\n
  2. A mini pump like this:<\/a> Essential if you want to pump up a new inner tube after a puncture.<\/li>\n
  3. Spare chain links\u00a0like these: bicycle chains<\/a> do break, and you don\u2019t want to walk your bike home.<\/li>\n
  4. A chain tool\u00a0like this:\u00a0To remove the broken link before you replace it.<\/li>\n
  5. An Allen key multitool perhaps with a chain tool like this<\/a> to save you carrying a separate one: This multi tool comes with a chain tool and a billion allen keys.<\/li>\n
  6. Zip ties for temporary repairs if something breaks or comes loose<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Gordon\u2019s portable toolkit is so minimal, you could carry it in a cycling jersey\u2019 back pockets, or in a pannier or rucsack\u2019s outer pouch. Yet this mini kit should enable you to deal with 99% of the \u2018mechanicals\u2019 you\u2019re ever likely to encounter.<\/p>\n

    ONE FINAL TIP<\/h2>\n

    This might sound obvious but check you kit is fit for the bike your riding. Here\u2019s a salutary tale from the Bike Co-op\u2019s Ged.<\/p>\n

    My Sunday bike (the Roubaix) has QR wheels, and its folding cycling tyres<\/a> can be removed with one lever. My everyday cross\/town bike (the Genesis Croix De Fer<\/a>) has track nuts, which require a 15mm spanner, plus I need two or three levers to remove its ultra tight wire-bead Schwalbe Marathon tyres.<\/p>\n

    If I go out on the Roubaix I\u2019m sometimes precious about keeping it\u2019s weight low, so I remove what\u2019s not required from the emergency kit. Then I discover a few days later that I don\u2019t have the tools required to fix the Genesis because I neglected to replenish the tool kit. Doh.<\/p>\n
