\"gordon-archibald.jpg\" Not only can winter cycling be a psychological challenge for the most stoic of riders, it can also be unkind to your bicycle. Rain, mud, grit and road salt may clog up your drivetrain and start to wear down the components. No matter; we caught up with Gordon the Mechanic in our\u00a0 Edinburgh Bruntsfield<\/a> shop to ask him for his top winter bicycle maintenance tips. Here\u2019s what he said:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Wash the bike at least once a week.<\/li>\n
  2. If you clean your bike regularly it should only take five or ten minutes to clean it \u2013 especially if you have access to a hose (but be wary of pressure washers that can blast the grease out of your bearings).<\/li>\n
  3. It\u2019s not essential but a bike cleaner like this<\/a> makes it quicker and easier to clean your bike more thoroughly.<\/li>\n
  4. Dry the bike off with a rag, as a wet bike only attracts dirt.<\/li>\n
  5. Now your bike is clean, check the brake pads for wear.<\/li>\n
  6. If you have rim brakes, check the pads for shards of embedded grit and metal that can score the rims.<\/li>\n
  7. Keep an eye on the chain and make sure it\u2019s lubed to prevent rust.<\/li>\n
  8. A wet lube\u00a0like this\u00a0will hang on longer.<\/li>\n
  9. A dry lube\u00a0like this\u00a0will be cleaner (pick up less grime) but you might need to spray it on every day.<\/li>\n
  10. Keep your tyres up to recommended pressure (sorry if this sounds like we\u2019re stating the obvious but a large proportion of the customers\u2019 bikes we\u2019re asked to check over have underinflated tyres.)\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    So there you have it, 10 easy-to-follow steps by the man who\u2019s seen it all. A little regular maintenance every week is worth a lot more than a big overhaul every few months.<\/p>\n

This is compounded by the fact that the light appears bright when you switch it on.
