Marin Fairfax SC1 £250 (RRP £400)

We have a hunch that this might be our best buy in commuter/hybrid bikes, ever.
Way back around 1990 we started selling a bike that redefined what to expect from a hybrid bike.
That bike was called the Marin Sausalito.
Like most hybrids, the Sausalito combined the wheels, frame and fork of a road bike with the brake levers, shifters and flat handlebars of a mountain bike to create a versatile pleasure machine, equally fit for smooth tarmac and dirt roads.
The Sausalito difference was it’s sharp handling, which gave it the exciting, fast-steering feel of a good quality road bike. This ‘feel’ was down to the quality of the tubing that Marin selected for the frame and fork, and the bike’s undiluted road bike geometry.
The fact that the frame and fork’s matt black finish (something of a Marin trademark) looked particularly svelte and handsome helped no end to making it among our most sought-after hybrids.

A new kind of bicycle
With the Sausalito, Marin effectively created a new style of bicycle – the flatbar road bike – a style represented to this day by famous names such as the Cannondale Bad Boy, the Specialized Sirrus and the Revolution Courier.
The 2016 Marin Fairfax SC1 is built on the same winning flatbar road bike formula. (The clue is in the initials – SC for Speed Commuter.)
With its lightweight alloy frame and CrMo fork; its Shimano Altus 3×8 Rapidfire gearing with 11-32 cassette; it’s Schwalbe Kevlar 700×32 tyres and double-wall wheel rims, the Marin Fairfax easily matches the spec of any similar £400 fast hybrid.
With the price cut to £250, we can honestly say, hand on heart, its one of our best buys in bikes ever.
To make it even more of a steal, the Marin Fairfax SC1 qualifies for our Free15 offer. This means that if you want us to fit, say, a set of mudguards to the Fairfax, add them to your order, type in the voucher code FREEKIT15 and we’ll supply and fit the guards for free, and the fendered Fairfax will still only cost £250. Can’t say fairer than that.

Marin Muirwoods 29ER £425 (RRP £525)
Buy now >
Like the Fairfax SC1, the Muirwoods is a quick commuter, courtesy of its ‘endurance road’ bike geometry (73-74˚ seat tube / 72˚ head angle).
The Muirwoods difference is the butted CrMo frame’s steel-is-real sprung feel.
Then Marin add another £100-plus to the value of the bikes, courtesy of Tektro’s super-reliable, low-maintenance Auriga hydraulic disc brakes, which bring all-weather stopping power to your fingertips, courtesy of their light lever action.
Similarly, the Alivio 3×9 transmission, being a rung up the Shimano hierarchy from Altus 8-speed, offers even slicker gear changes.
Finally, the fatter 29×1.6” (700×40) Schwalbe Citizen tyres are noticeably more forgiving over cobbles, gravel roads and kerbs.
Saving £100 off this bike is definitely an offer worth catching – especially when you can take advantage of our Free15 promotion and claim up to £63.75 worth of clothing and/or accessories to put towards, say, a nice, new pair of Endura Urban Stretch Jeans.
