Co-op Member Review

"This bike got me tthrough the Scottish winter. Not only the winter but also the Scottish Cycling training camp in Skye. At the end of a five hour ride I was still feeling comfortable, even after riding the gravelly roads. It's got the right balance between comfort and stiffness. Even when it was pouring down with rain, it was still braking normally. It made me feel comfortable going down descents knowing that I would be able to stop in time if had too. Great bike for those long winter rides."
- Kyle, Co-op member

More Reasons to Buy the Giant Contend SL 1 Disc

Giant Conduct hydraulic disc brakes
Giant's unique disc brake is initially cable controlled from the Shimano 105 STI brake lever, but only to its reservoir, which is hidden under the handlebar stem from where a hydraulic line connects it to the caliper. The benefit of this system is that you get the improved power and modulation of a hydraulic brake while the caliper is much neater than previous hybrid cable/hydraulic systems for road bikes.

See Giant's own video.

Track record
Contend is the successor of the Defy - Giant's original super popular, multi-award winning, aluminium frame, endurance road bike range. (Giant now reserve the name 'Defy' for their carbon frame endurance road bikes.)

Like a Defy, a Giant Contend combines comfort with speed to create one of the best sportive-ready road bikes for the money.

Then Giant updated the design so the Contend now boasts internal gear cable routing and dispensed with the old Defy's 'washing line under the top tube' look. Also, the Contend's shorter seatstays make for snappier handling than its predecessor.

Giant Aluxx SL frame and Composite fork
Lighter weight and more compliant and shock absorbing than Giant's standard Aluxx frame tubing, Aluxx SL frame tubes are a finer-grain double-butted 6011 aluminium alloy for optimal strength:weight ratio. The result: arguably the best aluminium frame for the money.

Giant's Hybrid Composite fork combines carbon legs for excellent shock damping and steering precision with an OverDrive tapered aluminium steerer to help eliminate brake judder.

Giant D-Fuse Seatpost
The Giant D-shaped carbon seatpost helps damp bad vibes that would otherwise be transmitted from unsmooth road surfaces. Also, being D-shaped, it's impossible to set the saddle up squint.

Endurance Road Bike GeometryGiant's classic road bike frame geometry (72.5 degree head tube angle / 73 degree seat tube angle for medium-size frame) delivers a fast, engaging ride with engineered-in comfort. The Contend remains a true road bike. It just happens to be designed to be less stretched out and more comfortable for most riders, especially over longer distances. That's why endurance road bikes such as the Giant Contend are sometimes referred to as comfort road bikes or sportive bikes.
