Genesis Croix De Fer 20 2017

This is the first Reynolds steel frame bike in this year's Croix De Fer range. Its TRP Hy/Rd stoppers bring hydraulic operation to cable disc brakes.

Upgrades over Genesis Croix De Fer 10

  • Reynolds tubing has been a first choice of discerning frame builders and bike riders since at least the 1930s.
  • Reynolds 725 is a heat-treated, butted CrMo steel tube set which, in the hands of Genesis, creates a comfortable, super-resilient, lightweight frame. See road.cc review.
  • The 2x10 STI drivetrain of choice, Shimano Tiagra is that bit slicker-shifting than 9-speed Sora.
  • More than just mechs and shifters, this drivetrain includes a Shimano Tiagra 50/34 crankset and a Shimano 11-34 cassette to optimise performance over the widest range of gears. (It's common practice to 'sneak' a cheaper non-Shimano cassette and cassette to a Shimano drivetrain to save on costs. We find that an uncut all-Shimano transmission almost always work better than a diluted drivetrain.)
  • TRP (Tektro Racing Products) Hy/Rd brakes deserve a paragraph to themselves.

TRP HyRd cable-operated hydraulic disc brakes
TRP HyRd cable-operated hydraulic disc brakes work with conventional brake levers, yet they offer the adjustability and power previously reserved for hydraulic brakes. The advantage of this system over any previous cable-actuated disc brake system is that the pads are much easier to set up at an optimal distance from the rotor without rubbing. These brakes automatically self adjust so the pads move closer to the rotor as they wear down. This means that TRP (Tektro Racing Products) HyRd disc brakes maintain optimal performance over the whole life of every set of pads.

To quote road.cc's review: 'TRP Hy/Rd disc brakes combine cable actuation with hydraulic power right in the calliper. They're powerful, easy to live with and the best solution so far for disc brakes with conventional brake/gear levers.'

Same as Genesis Croix De Fer 10
With the Croix De Fer, Genesis can make fair claim to inventing a distinct bicycle category - the versatile cyclo-cross-inspired disc brake-equipped adventure road bike. That was back in 2008. For 2016, Genesis continue to get their Croix just right.

  • The frame and fork have clearance for full-length mudguards (which we'll be delighted to fit at no extra labour cost if you order the guards with the bike).
  • Kenda Flintridge 700x35c tyres run smooth on tarmac and offer cushioning on dirt roads.
  • Genesis compact flared bars, sized by bike size, offer easier transition from the bar tops to the drops.
  • The bars are comfortably finished with gel-padded cork tape.

No need for a MTB if you have one of these. Review by Jon

I use a Croix de Fer for just about anything. It's extremely competent on or off the road, in fact my mountain bike has never been out of the garage since it arrived. Although not the lightest, it's easy enough to shoulder and carry up and down steps, etc.
I could never see the point of discs on a bike, but I am a convert now ; the brakes are superb. Not the slickest of gear changes and I think a triple would really enhance the bike. That said I am really pleased with the way this bike goes.
