Harry Henniker CIRCULAR ROUTE ROUND NORTH FIFE

Distance: Distances Circular route on map 64 miles.
Newport on Tay to Auchtermuchty: 21 miles.
Auchtermuchty to Kettlehill: 8 miles.
Kettlehill to St. Andrews:16 miles
St Andrews to Newport on Tay: 19 miles

Map: OS Landranger, sheet 59 ( we recomed you get the OS map out and use the map below as a guide)

Start and finish: Any point on map. If having a day out say from Edinburgh or Glasgow and travelling by car. Head for St. Andrews (St. Andrews is about 1 hour by car from Edinburgh, slightly longer from Glasgow) and leave the car in one of car parks - there is a large car park down at the sands.

Terrain: Undulating with a couple of very steep hills - see map (no rugh tracks all can be cycled on a road bike)

Refreshments: Several hotels in Falkland all doing bar lunches, also a couple of tea rooms. There's also a choice of places in Auchtermuchty and Newburgh. Probably the best pub in Newburgh is the one you'll see with tables outside in the main street. There's a pub in Gauldry, but the choice of food is limited - choice of food shops pubs and tea rooms in Newport however. There are shops in Leuchars and Guardbridge, which might be handy if you are planning a picnic at Kinshaldy beach in Tentsmuir forest (a lovely quiet beach). St Andrews has lots of eating establishments and pubs, Littlejohns Restaurant is recommended but there are plenty of others. There's a pub in Pitscottie, but the choice is greater in Ceres. Despite the name there is no inn at Chance Inn.

Accommodation
Good independent hostel in Falkland (01337-857710).
Plenty of B&Bs and hotels in St Andrews (tourist info 01334-472021).
For accommodation in Fife generally phone Fife Tourist Board (01592-750066).

Fife has a growing network of cycle routes. Around Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy these are mostly utilitarian in character, but further east, between Falkland and St. Andrews they pass through quiet rural scenery.
