Lincolnshire Wolds, overnighting at Louth/Woody’s Top YHA
(90 miles total, moderate)

From Cycling Plus issue 181
by Nicky Crowther

Linconshire-woods

Saturday (approx 50 miles): Day one leads north out of Lincoln and crosses pleasant lowlying countryside to Market Rasen. It climbs to the top of Wolds, travels a short way and descends to Caistor for lunch. From Caistor you climb back up on and along the spine of the Wolds. Drop down the eastern edge for Louth, or stay up high for Woody’s Top. Leave central Lincoln 1 heading NNW on National Cycle Route 1 via the B1398 Burton Road. There turn ENE on the NCR along the doubletrack as far as the A15. Go left, ride with care on this heavilyused road and after 250m R on the lane to Riseholme 2. Continue on NCR via Nettleham 3 to Scothern, Stainton by Langworth, Snelland, Wickenby and Linwood to Market Rasen 4. Continue N through the town on NCR 1, now on B1203, and after 1mi turn off on the lane to Walesby. Head through the village and climb smoothly up the Wold (100m up in 1mi, passing the Rambler’s Church). On the top continue to the crossroads beside the mast, go left, N, to the B1225 and go left, N on that. Where the NCR turns off right (NE), stay N on the B1225 and a mile after that turn left, WSW, to pick up the lane that heads north above Normanby le Wold and down fast to Nettleton. From there jump along the A46 into Caistor 5. Leave Caistor SE up Whitegate Hill (B1225) and at the crossroads at the top turn left down to Rothwell. Climb out of the valley S, turning SW via Thoresway and head over to Binbrook 6. Leave the village E, turning SE, down Liimber Hill and at the crossroads go south on the lane via Kelstern to the junction with the A631. Go straight over, on to the A157. Dogleg left/right, E/S, on that, the Bluestone Heath Road, and follow that 2mi (the road continues on day two) as far as the crossroads above New Buildings. To stay in Louth 7, turn left, NE, and fl oat down to Louth via Hallington and Hubbards Hills. To stay at Woody’s Top YHA 8 continue another 3mi to the crossroads at Rowgate Hill. There turn left, E. The hostel is 2mi along then right, and on for 250m.

Sunday (approx 40 miles): Day two regains the ridgeline road, briefly, then steadily leaves the Wolds behind via Tetford. Once back down below, return to Lincoln on lanes via Horncastle. If you stay in Louth retrace your steps back up to the ridgeline crossroads and the Bluestone Heath Road, there turn left, S and ride SE via to Rowgate Hill, and continue, turning E to the Tetford Hill crossroads. If you stay at the YHA, for the best view retrace your steps back to the Rowgate Hill where you pick up the Bluestone Heath Road and turn left. Or you can cut out 4mi but add a climb by coming due south from the hostel. At the Tetford Hill crossroads go S, steeply down to Tetford 9, continuing to Salmonby and Greetham, then on to Horncastle. Leave town E on a short section of the A158, turning soon on to the B1190 west. Continue on this road to Bardney 10, where you pick up NCR1 again and follow that on the B1202, turning off W at Young Wood 11 and riding via Short Ferry and Fiskerton 12 back to Lincoln 1.

OS Landrangers 113, 121 and 122.
Route details: Lincolnshire Wolds This route tours much of the length of the Wolds, mostly using the Bluestone Heath Road, the ancient ridge track once trod by the Romans and the Celts. The views are long, the Wolds undulating to hilly and there’s a choice of where to stay, either descending to the nice town of Louth, or remaining high out in the Wolds at the little-known youth hostel Woody’s Top. Day one is longer, but can be cut short at several points, eg, leave out Caistor and ride from Market Rasen direct either to Thoresway or, shorter again, to Binbrook. The main climbs are steady rather than steep: on to the Wolds above Walesby and back up after Caistor. The second day is shorter, the only climb being back up to the Bluestone road at the beginning. We leave the Wolds behind quite early for a green and pleasant return to Lincoln through a flatter rural landscape. To navigate use OS Landrangers 113, 121 and 122. Where to stay in Louth/Woody’s Top YHA Handsome, comfortable Louth has a tourist office on Ü¥ 01507 609289 and affordable accommodation at the central Ramsgate Hotel (Ü¥ 01507 602179). The nearest YHA is quiet Woody’s Top (Ü¥ 0870 770 6098, self-catering only) which sits high up on the Wolds 7 miles south of Louth.
