Across the Humber, overnighting in
Hull (95 miles total, moderate) (Road Route)
From Cycling Plus issue 181

Across the Humber though not as picturesque as touring the Wolds, if you’ve been there and done that, and fancy riding across the Humber Bridge to sample Hull’s nightlife one weekend this is a nice country/city combination trip.

Those who seek more than city lights can extend the ride by working their way north through Hull to Beverley for a more tranquil Saturday night stay, or continue another 12 miles on the Trans Pennine Trail through Hull to the rail trail that forms the TPT’s final leg to the North Sea at Hornsea. One section of unsurfaced bridleway on NCR1 on the outward trip requires a bike with tyres that can handle a bit of rough stuff.

It’s best done in the dry and is not for skinny race bikes. The onroad diversion continues to Kirmington, heading west on the A18 and then rejoining the route at Melton Ross.

To navigate use OS Landrangers 107, 112, 113, 121.

Where to stay and visit in Hull Gritty old Hull has pubs, a historic dock, preserved art nouveau toilets and the Fish Trail, a walk round the Old Town following fishy depictions in the pavement.

The Hull Tourist Information Centre is on 01482 223559.

For B&B try the Clyde House Hotel ( 01482 214981) near the old town.

A good place to eat is the Italian restaurant Cerutti ( 01482 328501).

Saturday (approx 35 miles): Humber Bridge. The picturesque town of Louth
Saturday (approx 50 miles): This undulating day sets out across the North Lincs countryside, climbs on to the Wolds above Walesby and heads north, with a little (avoidable) off road, en route for the Humber Bridge and the city of Hull. From Lincoln 1 follow the route of the Lincolnshire Wolds Explorer as far as B1225 on the Wolds above Walesby 2. There stay on the B road N all the way to Caistor, by-passing the town (unless you want to visit for lunch etc) and picking up the A1173 heading north. After 1mi turn off N on the lane. At the crossroads after 2.5mi join National Cycle Route 1 and head off NW on the unsurfaced track. Follow NCR1 via Barnetby Le Wold 3 and lanes north to Barton-upon-Humber 4. The route then takes you across the Humber on the suspension bridge. Once on the north bank, where there’s a visitor centre and picnic tables/country park, pick up the Trans Pennine Trail going E under the bridge roadway and make your way into Hessle 5. After 2/3mi this connects with NCR65, which is then signposted all the way into the centre of Hull 6.

Sunday (approx 45 miles): Day two is an easy cruise back south. Once across the Humber the route rolls over the Saxby Wolds (90m slow up, fast down) and runs along the base of the slope beside fenland to Brigg. After that the
lanes show the same character virtually all the way back to Lincoln, as you pass through gentle, fertile lowland criss-crossed with drains and dykes, visiting half a dozen little villages. Retrace your steps on the TPT/NCR back across the Humber Bridge to the middle of Barton on Humber 7. There pick up the B1218 (Brigg road) and after 1km, on the edge of town, turn right, SE on the lane. Go on to Horkstow Wolds 8 and down off
the edge of the Saxby Wolds to the B1204. Follow that S via Worlaby 9 to the B1206. Go right on that, SW, to Wrawby. Head SE through the village, dogleg left/right with care on the A18 and continue on lanes to the A1084 at Kettleby Carrs Farm. Head E for 1/3mi on the A1084, then turn S on the B1434 to South Kelsey 10. Turn W here on the B1205 to Waddingham 11 . Turn S on lanes via Snitterby to Glentham 12, and continue to Normanby-by- Spital. Continue S on meandering lanes via Spridlington to Welton 13, then to Scothern, where you pick up NCR1 SW back via Nettleham to Lincoln.

OS Landrangers 107, 112, 113, 121.
