The Stirling has earned a reputation for being the best equipped Whyte R7 Fast Urban Commuter Bike if you're on a sub-£1,000 Bike to Work Schemebudget.
- As Cycling Plus magazine put it a couple of years ago when they gave the Whyte Stirling a 4.5/5 rating, 'high quality kit on a mountain bike-style frame creates a great urban bike'. See full review.
For season 2016 the Whyte Stirling has been further upgraded as follows.
- SRAM S700/Rival 2x11 drivetrain for even smoother shifting.
- SRAM Rival 50/34 chainset with outboard cartridge sealed bearings.
- 32mm deep wheel rims (offset rear!) for extra strength with 3M reflective decals for extra safety, and cartridge sealed hub bearing for smoother rolling longevity.
Whyte R7 Fast Urban Road Bike Overview
Also known as 'flatbar road bikes', R7 Fast Urban Commuter bikes combine close-to road bike speed with a level of handling and control, previously reserved for mountain bikes whose riser handlebars ensure the gear shifters and hydraulic brake levers are always within easy reach.
Whyte R7 Fast Urban Road Bikes are fast becoming the first choice of experienced cyclists who normally ride a mountain bike or a racing bike, but are looking for a flatbar city bike that doesn't compromise performance: hence the lightweight butted aluminium frame, the lightweight, folding, zippy, puncture-resistant Maxxis 700x28 tyres, the compact double chainset transmissions and the unique control you enjoy when the bike is equipped with high quality hydraulic disc brakes.
The Stirling employs some of the best elements of Whyte’s unique UK trail-optimised MTB hardtails to create a nippy, agile city bike. The custom gauge 6061 aluminium frame's long wheelbase and relaxed 69 degree head angle deliver high speed stability. The shorter stem enables slow speed manoeuvrability. Its shaped, butted, profiled stays make for a fantastically responsive and comfortable rear end. Hydraulic disc brakes offer a level of control previously reserved for high-end trail mountain bikes.
The Undeniable benefits of Hydraulic Disc Brakes
- Moving the brakes from the mud and rain-attracting wheel rims to the relatively clean hubs make for an improvement in the brakes' all-weather all-conditions performance.
- Disc brake pads are much harder so they last much longer. So do the rims now that they are no longer worn down by the brake pads.
- The benefits of hydraulic disc brakes is that they are mechanically more efficient than cable-operated brakes when it comes to that essential function of bicycle brakes - the pads engage and release more efficiently.
- Another significant factor is that hydraulic hoses, unlike cables, are not prone to fraying, rusting, kinking and breaking. This fundamental difference explains why hydraulic brakes require far less maintenance and adjustment than cable-operated brakes.
Whyte Custom-drawn Tubing
Every Whyte aluminium frame is built with custom drawn tubes. This means that Whyte go to the expense of spec'ing a different tube set for each frame size. Apparently, it’s normal practice for bike companies to save money by using the same tube set for every size. This means that a butted tubeset will have to be designed around the smallest frame size. Say the smallest frame size is 16”. When the tubes are cut to size, they will have a short thicker-walled section at each end as you would expect from butted tubes. When the same tube set is used to create a 21” frame a much larger proportion of the tube will be thick walled. That’s why large frames are often disproportionately heavier than they need be. Custom tubing is Whyte's guarantee that the frame will be as light as possible in every size.
Mudguard and Rack Compatible
Custom dropouts enable Whyte to mount the rear hydraulic disc brake caliper inside the rear triangle, making it rack and mudguards compatible. If you want any extras fitted to a Whyte Stirling, such as Whyte's matching mudguards, let us know when you order the bike and we will customise the bike to your requirements at no extra labour charge.
The Stirling is our top of the range aluminium urban bike, boasting Tektro’s powerful Auriga disc brakes and SRAM’s superb Rival 22 flat bar drivetrain.
Based on our high performance mountain bike geometry, the Stirling has a long wheelbase and relaxed head angle for high speed stability, and a shorter stem for excellent slow speed manoeuvrability.
A custom rear dropout allows us to mount the rear hydraulic disc brake caliper inside the rear triangle, clearing the way for fitting mudguards and/or a rack.'
