Same as Specialized Camber 29
The Camber represents the latest development in Specialized FSR - one of the best proven and most highly evolved suspension systems in mountain biking. The Camber's simple, ingenious inline shock placement means that bump forces through the axle are dealt with instantaneously. Making the suspension pivot points an integrated part of the frame (rather than welded-on components) highlights the benefits of Specialized’s hydroformed frame construction expertise.
29ers
The word from the USA is that hardtails and XC dual suspension bikes with 29 inch tyres (AKA 29ers) are beginning to outsell mountain bikes with traditional 26 inch tyres. Here’s why.
Pros:
- Bigger tyres offer more cushioning and better traction.
- Momentum gained via the wheels’ greater rotational mass can get you through tough sections that might slow down smaller wheels.
- The benefits of enhanced rotational momentum are especially noticeable on longer rides and when riding uphill.
- A larger wheel makes contact with trail obstacles at a shallower angle. The result is that you float over roots & rocks that you might have once stuttered over.
- Bigger wheels cover the ground quicker once they get up to speed - this is especially noticeable on climbs.
- With over a decade’s experience developing 29”-wheeled MTBs, America’s most progressive bike companies have totally nailed the geometry. 29er’s higher bottom bracket helps you clear obstacles.
- However this bottom bracket will actually be lower in relationship to the wheel hubs so this can make the bike more stable.
- Another advantage of 29er geometry is that even tall riders on larger bikes can enjoy the extra clearance benefits of a frame with a sloping top tube.
- Although the majority of 29ers are hardtails, a number of progressive bike companies are now integrating 29” wheels with full suspension. In fact they have done so with such success, 29er converts will tell you that their 100mm-travel Giant Anthem 29er or their 110mm-travel Specialized Camber 29er can downhill almost as well as a 26”-tyre 140mm-travel trail bike.
Con:
Big (therefore heavier) wheels take more time to get up to speed and they might not be quite as nimble when you have to weave through tight twisty sections.

I bought my Camber Comp 29er after demoing several full-sus 29er's. I've had the bike for a couple of weeks now, and have had chance to try it on trail centre and natural terrain. My initial impression when I collected the bike was that it was a bit heavier than I was expecting (it's just under 30lbs according to my scales); however, when riding, the bike feels much lighter than its actual weight. The rear suspension has quite a pert feel under pedalling, and Pro-Pedal is only really needed on long tarmac climbs. Off-road, the bike really comes alive, the combination of 29er wheels, supple suspension and long wheelbase mean that it can cover the ground quickly and with less effort than a 26er. The additional stability is not at the expense of manoeuvrability and, with a bit of rider input, the bike can be flicked around just as well as many 26ers. The bike has quite a 'pop-able' fun feel, and it is quite easy to boost off trail obstacles to get airborne - in the air, the bike is very neutral and lands well. In trail centres in particular, the bike excels. The 29er wheels iron out more of the trail chatter and braking bumps than 26er's, and in bermed corners (or any corners!), the larger wheel diameter combined with the supple suspension gives phenomenal grip. By staying off the brakes and using the extra cornering grip available, it's possible to cover the ground very quickly - it's a good job the brakes are powerful stoppers! The bike is very confidence inspiring on descents and it handles very steep descents better than some 140/150mm travel 26er's I've ridden! In conclusion, if you're looking for a decent full-suspension bike for blasting 'round UK trail centres and/or natural trails; get yourself a demo of a Camber 29er! |
