Q. Hi I have a set of these pedals and although I like them I've fallen off a few times generally having to do emergency stops for cars or bikes and not being able to unclip in time. Would I find it easier with atb style pedals?
A. You may well find that unclipping quickly is easier with a mountain bike or touring stye (SPD) pedal rather than a road (SPD SL) pedal. The ease of unclipping is though related to set up and practice. With set up it is possible to adjust the tension of the release on the R540 pedals. It might help to run at least one pedal with lower tension so you can get your foot out quickly when required or at least as you get used to braking as well us unclipping when stopping quickly.

With a standard SPD pedals the cleats supplied do like road cleats use a single release (i.e. your twist your heel outwards to disengage the cleat). Multi-release cleats are available separately for SPD pedals which are useful in learning to unclip quickly. Multi release cleats allow you to unclip in any direction by twisting your heel. When combined with SPD pedals with release tension set to a minimum it is then very easy to unclip. The downside to this is you cannot pull up too much when pedalling as your foot can unclip. Once you get used to the pedals you can though refit single release cleats.
Q. Do they include cleats?
A. R540 SPD-SL pedals come with cleats, the cleats are 3-bolt design, +/- 3˚ float, which allows for some knee-saving lateral movement.
