Schwalbe Marathon Plus Reflective Tyre

A growing number of us at the Bike Co-op have been relying on Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tyres as our everyday treads for over a decade. The reason is simple.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus Reflective Tyres are the most puncture-resistant pneumatic tyres we've tested.

The fact that they are also smooth rolling yet exceptionally grippy in all weathers make Schwalbe Marathon Plus probably the ultimate urban / utility / hybrid / touring bike tyres.

The 26x1.5 inch version of the Schwalbe Marathon Plus is a first step towards converting a knobbly-tyred mountain bike to a slick-shod hybrid for mostly road use.

  • Schwalbe's flexible, 5mm-thick SmartGuard sub-tread effectively deflects the sharpest thorns and shards.
  • Combine the Smart Guard sub-tread with Schwalbe's Endurance tread and you have almost a centimetre of protection between the road and the inner tube.
  • Despite this awesome protection, the Schwalbe Marathon's low rolling resistance makes it quiet and smooth running.
  • This Endurance tread is very sure footed - even on wet, gravelly towpaths.
  • The tyre's reflective sidewalls make perfect sense on a city bike.
  • The tyre's wide recommended pressure range (typically 50-85psi) allows you to select your preferred comfort level.
  • Approximate weights: 740g (700x28), 800g (700x32), 895g (700x35), 860g (26x1.5in).

Yorkshire
On the plus side: - Bombproof. Not a single puncture in 4 years of riding tarmac, hardpack, and gravel paths. - Very hard wearing. - Low rolling resistance. - Grippy in the dry on all surfaces including grass. On the minus side: - More difficult to fit than most tyres due to the inflexibility of the puncture protection layer. - Weight. The increased rotational mass makes the bike noticeably more sluggish. - Not the most comfortable tyre, presumably due to the stiffness of the puncture protection layer. - Wet grip is nothing special and they're useless on thick mud. They also seem to pick up mud from gravel paths and deposit it inside the mudguards. I've had to stop to scrape the mud out repeatedly in conditions where a friend riding on ordinary Marathons had no issues. Summary A great all-rounder and a brilliant choice if you want a hard-wearing, bombproof tyre and therefore ideal for urban commuting and touring (which is what they're intended for). Pretty handy off-road too, as long as you avoid mud!

Q. I have a revolution courier pursuit. The current tyres are 700x42c. Would the 35c fit and could I order a pair for the Leeds store?
A. These should fit. If you have any worries the guys in the store will be able to advise you with the bike in front of them. You can order them to be collected in any of our stores.
Q. Hi, have a giant roam 2 fitted with 700 40c tyres are the 35s ok for this or should I hold out for the 38s? I see you don't seem to stock these or can you order them? Also how much to fit them as well? Thanks
A. The 700*35 Schwalbes should be absolutely fine.  You will however notice slightly reduced rolling resistance coupled with slightly less comfort.  We do however appear to have a couple of 700*38 marathons in our Edinburgh store which you are welcome to order.  If you would like to place an order, please give us a call on the telephone number below.
