Marin Fairfax SC4 '14

The initials 'SC' means this is a Marin's Speed Commuter hybrid bike. In other words, the Marin Fairfax SC4 falls in the same category as our Revolution Courierrange, in that it matches close to road bike-like speed potential with the flat bar control you will be familiar with if you're used to a mountain bike.

The Marin Fairfax SC4 stands out by being built on a particularly clean, lightweight triple butted 6061 aluminium frame.

Like a better quality road bike, the Fairfax boasts a quick-steering, lightweight carbon fibre fork.

As with a better quality mountain bike the Marin Fairfax SC4's hydraulic disc brakes guarantee single-digit fingertip speed control.

The gearing is also MTB derived - Shimano 3x9 Acera Rapidfire - but with a special higher-geared Acera 48/36/26 chainset, which offers a gear for near any hill, up or down, when matched with the 11-34 Shimano cassette.

The tyres are Continental Contact 700 x32 with Safety Puncture protection, as you might find on the best touring bikes. Talking of which, the frame and fork will take full mudguards and a rear rack. The rear dropouts will even take a rear kickstand. (If you need anything fitted to any new bike, just ask when you order it and we will waive our normal fitting charge.)

Nice touches include the exceptionally comfortable Ergon handlebar grips and the wheel's security skewers, which require a special tool, so only you can remove them.

Put it all together and you get an exceptional hybrid bike that really does blend the best elements of various bicycle types to create a singular machine capable of taking you far beyond its 'Speed Commuter bike' denomination.

Ask a question
Q. Is the SC4'14 suitable for use on the gravelled waggonways (refurbed railways tracks) found in the ne of england
A. The Marin Fairfax should cope with the riding you describe. As standard it is fitted with 700x32c Continental Contact II tyres which will cope with riding on trails and paths as well as on road. This size of tyre should also offer enough volume to run slightly lower pressures for more comfort on poorer surfaces.
Q. What is the typical weigth of a medium SC4 '14 please.
A. Marin don't provide weights for their bikes unfortunately and we haven't been able to weigh a Fairfax SC4 as yet. However, given the spec and style of bike we would expect the weight to be in the region of 11-11.5kg.
