Giant Defy 1 '13
When Cycling Plus magazine reviewed the Giant Defy 1 this March, they hailed it as ‘the best riding bike we know of at this price point...its superb chassis creates a responsive but flowing ride backed up by balanced handling and excellent components’.
Such glowing reviews have their influence. The bike sold out within days throughout the land. If you wanted a Giant Defy 1, you had to wait months for fresh supplies to arrive from Taiwan. This rave review was also a vivid endorsement of what Giant are all about. Their technical processes (described in our Defy 1 review below) and their economies of scale make a Giant bicycle a contender for best buy at every price point.
The 2012 Defy 1 was so well received, Giant have had the good sense to leave it unchanged. (This ain’t always the case. We’ve witnessed many frustrating examples of bicycle companies prematurely retiring classic equipment.) The Giant Defy 1 2013 is still built with their trademark Fluid Formed Aluxx SL frame that the Cycling Plus reviewers loved so much. Shimano 105 STI shifters and mechs guarantee slick gear changes. Giant’s own P-R2 wheels with sealed bearings and DT double butted spokes are as good as you’ll get at this price - which sums up what we have come to expect from this big friendly Giant bicycle company.
Giant's decision to stick with the tried and tested was more than vindicated when the Defy 1 was once again voted Best £1,000 road bike in February 2013 against an impressive roster of competitors in - Cycling Plus magazine review.
'The 2013 Giant Defy is the best road bike in countless magazine tests. Brought to you by the world’s leading aluminium frame engineers, Defy redefines the performance possibilities of an entry-level road bike. Made from premium lightweight aluminium tubes and produced in Giant’s own forging facility, it climbs, corners and sprints better than bikes costing thousands more.'

I needed a new commute bike and decided it might as well be nice rather than budget. I narrowed my search down to two brands and then at the last minute decided to include the Giant as a third option as it had such good reviews. I arranged a convenient time to go the the local EBC and try them out. The Defy 1 was an instant hit. I felt like it was an extension of my body rather than me being perched on top of it. Its reaction time to quick avoid-the-pothole flicks is brilliant. There is a downside, though, I can't stop riding it. Even long weekend rides I'm choosing it over my carbon fibre racer. Definitely recommended. |
