Focus Raven 29R 3.0
Cutting-edge carbon hardtail frame with PF30 bottom bracket, integrated cable routing, tapered head tube and 29" wheel geometry. Fox 32 Float RL fork. Shimano SLX/XT 3x10 transmission. Magura hydraulic disc brakes. Surely a bike this good will cost two-to-three thousand quid? It doesn't? It must be a Focus!
- This beautifully executed carbon frame utilises Focus’s SSPS system.
- Stable Stiffness Per Size means that an XS Raven frame will have narrower diameter tubes than a small, and so on. And that's just one of many reasons to admire the Raven 29R 3.0.
- The tapered steerer and head tube reinforces that highly stressed part of the bike, the resulting larger bearing races promotes smooth headset performance and longevity.
- Chainstay Postmount. The disc brake calliper's post-mount is located on the non-drive side chain stay which is both stiffer and stronger than the narrower seat-stay. Braking forces are thus directly transferred into the frame where it's strongest. The Focus post mount positions the brake in front of the chain stay to take advantage of the additional cooling airflow.
- The PF30 bottom bracket is a more refined version of BB30.
- As with BB30 the 30mm diameter aluminium spindle saves weight and the larger diameter bearings last longer, while the oversized BB shell provides a larger interface with the down tube, seat tube and chain stays. The resulting improvement in torsional stiffness rewards you with an immediate and noticeable power response every time you put pressure on the pedals.
- The PF30 bottom bracket is encased in a plastic sleeve to make it even more weatherproof, then it's pressed into the bottom bracket shell.
- Reinforced Integrated Cable Tunnels. These tunnels don't just enable neat, efficient, kink-free, slap-free cable routing, this arrangement makes it easy to replace the cables in the future (not always the case with internally routed cables).
Focus Bicycles
- When he founded Focus Bicycles in 1992, Mike Kluge was one of the most winning mountain bikers on the planet.
- One glance at the Focus Raven 29R 3.0, you can tell that Mike remains a mountain bike master.
- Every Focus bicycle is built at their own facility in Germany.
- Their focus is to manufacture premium quality bicycles at great value prices.
- Focus bicycles are built to be ridden hard.
- To ensure an extra-tough scratch-resistant finish that keeps its looks, every Focus frame is finished in an indestructible lacquer.
- Every Focus frame is powder coated - the colour is applied to the electro-statically charged frames in the form of fine powder.
- Focus hand build their own wheels in Germany to a tolerance of 0.3 millimetres (the accepted industry standard is 1mm).
29ers
The word from the USA is that hardtails and XC dual suspension bikes with 29 inch tyres (AKA 29ers) are beginning to outsell mountain bikes with traditional 26 inch tyres. Here’s why.
- Bigger tyres offer more cushioning and better traction.
- Momentum gained via the wheels’ greater rotational mass can get you through tough sections that might slow down smaller wheels.
- The benefits of enhanced rotational momentum are especially noticeable on longer rides and when riding uphill.
- A larger wheel makes contact with trail obstacles at a shallower angle. The result is that you float over roots & rocks that you might have once stuttered over.
- Bigger wheels cover the ground quicker once they get up to speed - this is especially noticeable on climbs.
- 29er’s higher bottom bracket helps you clear obstacles.
- However this bottom bracket will actually be lower in relationship to the wheel hubs so this can make the bike more stable.
- Another advantage of 29er geometry is that even tall riders on larger bikes can enjoy the extra clearance benefits of a frame with a sloping top tube.
