Early Rider Belter Kids 16''
Early Rider Belter Kids
The Belter is a first 'pedal bike' from Early Rider - a company who made its good name producing our favourite wooden balance bikes.
The Belter is as refreshingly innovative as we have come to expect from this British company.
First there's the weight, or lack of it. At just under 6kg the Early Rider Belter is around half the weight of the average 16 inch-wheeled kids' bike, and a good 4 kilograms lighter than most better quality 16" junior mountain bikes. The result - a bicycle that's much easier to control and manoeuvre when you are 4 or 5 years years old.
Early Rider achieves this exceptional weight loss by giving the bike an exceptional spec, featuring a never-rust Gates belt drive to replace the standard-issue steel chain. A Gates Belt Drive on a kids' bike is exceptional when you consider this innovation is usually reserved for 4-figure adult bikes.
Other features that set the Early Rider Belter apart include:
- The lightweight aluminium frame is hand brushed and lacquered so you'll never have to worry about the paint getting chipped
- The alloy V-brakes are controlled with short-reach levers for smaller hands.
- The wheels spin on cartridge sealed bearing hubs - rarely seen on adult bikes this side of £1,000.
- Winner: Eurobike Award 2012.
- Winner: Red Dot Product Design Award 2013.
- Recommended age range: 3.5 to 6 years old.
We will leave Early Rider themselves to reveal the whole story behind this belter of a bike.
'Arguably our most rewarding bike as well as one of the hardest to develop. At a little over 5.5kgs the Belter sets the standard. It's worth bearing in mind that every kilo on a 3 year olds' bike is the equivalent of 4 or 5 on an adult bike. At 5kgs lighter than most 16" bikes, that's a big difference to a child.
It's not just the weight however, everything is designed for low rolling resistance. The high thread count, high psi tyres, the cartridge bearing hubs and even bespoke full bearing aluminium pedals all play a part. But it is the Belt drive that steals the show, a belt will never stretch like a chain, it'll never be gunked up by dirt and grease and it will be as good the day your kid has finished with it as the day they first rode it, and dad doesn't have to worry about maintaining it.'
The Early Rider Belter will not take stabilisers (as you might expect from a company that made its good name making better balance bikes).
