Avid BB5 Disc Brake
Avid BB (for ball-bearing actuated) brakes are generally reckoned to be the best mechanical (cable operated) disc brakes money can buy.
- Avid BB5 Brakes are highly recommended if you are looking for disc brake performance, reliability and longevity but you are wary about going down Hydraulic Road.
- Levers not supplied, the Avid BB5 Disc Brake works with any V-brake lever.

'There’s power in simplicity. For years now, ball bearing disc brakes have been a favourite among riders who want control, durability, dependability and piece-of-cake adjusting. BB’s adjustment knobs make quick work out of setting the perfect distance between the pads and rotor, as well as adjusting for pad wear. This is something you just can’t do with hydraulic brakes. And when you run ball bearing disc brakes, you can match them with our Speed Dial® levers for sweet, adjustable modulation.
Tri-Align Caliper Positioning System
Another original Avid technology making your life better—there’s never been an easier brake to install and adjust. With Avid’s Tri-Align Caliper Positioning System, aligning the calliper to the rotor literally takes seconds. Just loosen the CPS bolts a little, and then squeeze the brake lever while re-tightening the bolts. Perfect calliper alignment—just like that.'

As far as I'm concerned, the avid BB mechanical disc brakes are easily the best you can buy. The bb5 is almost as good as its big brother, the bb7, but at a more reasonable price. I've used it for commuting and mountain bikes, and although it doesn't have the same stopping power as a hydraulic disc brake, it is very easy to install and setup and provides smooth, reliable and flex-free braking. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these if it's a cable (rather than a hydraulic) disc brake you are looking for. |
