Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op's new bike manual is different. It's an interactive CD. Stick it in your computer and you're presented with a retro-style TV, complete with tuning dial that you can use to navigate the contents. There are voice-overs and short video clips showing you how to set the saddle to the right height, how to fix a puncture, how to lube your bike, and so on. On top of this there's advice on fitness (eating, drinking and stretching), and safety (lights, reflectives and helmets). The latter includes a mock Charlie Chaplin silent movie (well, there are crash noises). There's even a simple game, Courier Dude. in which you have to navigate around cars and obstructions without getting wiped out. Then there's a load of automated links to Edinburgh Bicycle's website. The only thing I missed were video clips for the stretching sections; you get stills. The interface is easy to use and neatly styled, and the whole CD's got a good feel to it: it's upbeat, accurate and funny. This isn't good media by cycling standards - it's good media by any standard. It runs on both PC and Mac. PCs require Windows 95, 98 or 2000 and should be Pentium P11 or above. Apple Macs need OS 8 or later and 68mb or more of RAM. It's free if you buy an Edinburgh Bike. If you buy it separately, it's £7.95 - a price at which it'd still earn 8 out of 10. Verdict
10/10 Cycling Plus: July 2002.
There are sections on riding position and saddle height, wheel removal and replacement, basic maintenance and stretching, plus links to useful websites including EBC's own. Once you've memorised this lot, the CD still has something to offer in the shape of a video game called Courier Dude. The CD is given free with any bike bought from the EBC, and can also be obtained from the cooperative's Edinburgh or Aberdeen branches, by phone on 0845 257 0808, or from the website priced £7.95.' Cycling Weekly, 20 April 2002. You get this CD free with any bicycle ordered from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op. Alternatively you can order it for £7.95. TEXT} |
