'Wouldn't it be great to have a third arm? Imagine what you could do with it. Ride your bike and pick your nose, hold two pints and a chaser, drive with two hands... the list is nearly endlessly clichéd.

Having three hands would also make fixing bikes a lot easier. Don't get too excited by that fad though, growing a third arm and having it surgically attached to you isn't cheap thanks to it being quite a hard thing to do, apparently.

The good thing is that you don't have to spend a fortune to get a workstand that works very well, and is almost as useful as a third arm. This stand from Revolution is particularly well priced and well built.

Starting at the top is a large rubber clamp, this is done up by a large quick release type lever. I've had 371b bikes held by the seatpost in the clamp and they've not slipped, so rest assured it's strong enough, it's also a lot easier to do up than a fancy ratchet system or knob. The clamp also rotates, so you can hold your bike in whatever odd attitude you like.

The stand is collapsible, again using quick releases to secure things, and will pack down to a size that makes it convenient for taking along to events and the like for proper pro-racer posing value with your bike outside your tent.

The legs open nice and wide and give a stable base for the whole thing and have rubber feet so you won't scratch the parquet flooring in your bike chamber.

This one's been going three years and nothing has snapped or bent, and anything that works loose can be tightened easily with the same tools you'd fix your bikes with.

Overall. Save yourself having to grow a third arm and buy one of these.'

'Made from lightweight and attractively finished aluminium, setting up this workstand will be intuitive for anyone who has used a camera tripod. The extensive use of quick release closures means it erects in seconds and folds to a very compact 100x20x18cm - great for storage and portability. The oversized main tube adjusts between one and one and a half metres, ensuring the bike can be worked on at the most convenient height.

For such a lightweight design, it feels remarkably stable on most surfaces thanks to the broad legs and rubberised feet. Plastic is used extensively, particularly the clamp assembly which flexed when securing the bike. However, in fairness, the cam style QR locks positively, will rotate 360 degrees and the rubber lined jaws guard against frame damage.

Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op have produced an attractive stand that is easy to use for careful home mechanics, at a price that's hard to believe. Even if you added the compatible tool tray, you'd still have change from £80!

Verdict: Fit for purpose, easy to use and great value for money. Recommended. 9/10.'
