Bike Week 2009

Bike Week (13-21 June 2009) is the annual celebration of cycling when thousands of events are organised to encourage more people to get out on their bicycles.

Here are some of the events Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op will be supporting for Bike Week 2009. More Bike Week events are being planned as we speak. We will alert you to them once the details are finalised over the next few weeks.

Manchester

Acnabreck Mountain Bike Event

  • Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate: 11.00 - 16.00 Sunday 14 June 2009
    The National Trust are opening up the beautiful grounds of the Styal Estate in Cheshire on the first weekend of Bike Week. This 6-mile trail will be suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

    Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative will be offering a free water bottle, hex set and energy bar to the first 100 cyclists who turn up; a free chain clean and lube service to anyone trying out the route and free entry into a prize draw to win a Revolution Stow Rucsac.

  • Maintenance Monday: Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op, Manchester 10.00 - 19.00 Monday 15 June 2009
    To help ensure your bicycle is fit for bike week, our shop in Rusholme, Manchester is participating in Maintenance Monday. Just pop along with your bike and we will offer a free chain check and lube.

    Again, we will be offering a free water bottle and hex set to the first 100 cyclists who turn up, and free entry into a prize draw to win a Revolution Stow Rucsac.

  • Manchester Bike Breakfast: Peace Gardens Wednesday 8.00 - 10.00 17 June 2009
    Manchester Council's Environmental Campaigns Team will be laying on a free breakfast to any cyclist who turns up at Peace Gardens on Wednesday morning. Our mechanics will clean and lube your chain while you enjoy your well-earned snack.

    Again, we will be offering a free water bottle and hex set to the first 100 cyclists who turn up, and free entry into a prize draw to win a Revolution Stow Rucsac.

    After the Bike Breakfast, the Peace Gardens event will continue till 14:30 with, for instance, try-a-bike sessions aimed at people who haven't considered biking for years.

Leeds

  • Leeds Cycle Action Group / Edinburgh Bike Co-op Family Ride Sunday 14 June
    10.30am - Meet at Edinburgh Bike Co-op shop, 140 Woodland Lane, Chapel Allerton.

    Four mile ride to Roundhay Park and back. Quiet roads, suitable for families. EBC will provide basic bike health checks, refreshments and a goodie bag for all participants. U16s must be accompanied by an adult.

    Here's an email we received from a customer who enjoyed the 2008 ride.

    'I hadn't used a bike for 42 years until I bought one from from Edinburgh Bikes last week and really enjoyed the ride on Sunday. Thanks for organizing it. Here is a link to the photos I took during the ride.'

  • Bike To Work Open Day
    Tuesday 16 June, Millennium Square. 11:00-17:00.

    We will be offering a free gift pack to the first 100 riders who turn up. Our mechanics will be offering a free chain clean-and-lube service to every rider. Plus you will be able to enter a free prize draw to win our award-winning cyclist's rucsac, the Revolution Stow Sport.

    Filmhouse, Lothian Road, Edinburgh.

    Films to be screened include:

    Thursday: Home PLUS Inspired Bicycles - Danny MacAskill April 2009. Followed by Q & A with ex-Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op member, Chris Ball from Dirt School/Scottish Cycling.

    Friday: The Way Bobby Sees It PLUS The Biker.

    Saturday: Les Bicyclettes de Belsize PLUS Boy and Bicycle.

    Sunday: Klunkerz (Sunday 14 June 6.15pm)

  • Spokes Bike Breakfast - Edinburgh City Chambers: 8.00 - 10.00 Wednesday 17 June 2009
    The Council will be laying on a free breakfast to any cyclist who rides to the City Chambers courtyard on 17 June. Our mechanics will clean and lube your chain while you enjoy your well-earned bacon or veggie-burger roll.

  • Edinburgh - St Andrews Bike Ride: Saturday 20 June 2009
    Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op will be sweeping the route in their hire van to offer mechanical support as we have done every year since this fantastic ride's inception in 1981.

  • Tuesday 16 June Get About By Bike Day - Outside Marks & Spencers, St Nicholas Centre off Union Street. 8-10am.
    We will be offering a free gift pack to the first 100 riders who turn up. Our mechanics will be offering a free chain clean-and-lube service to every rider. Plus you will be able to enter a free prize draw to win our award-winning cyclist's rucsac, the Revolution Stow Sport.

    Nestrans are also planning to bring along free cycling goodies to entice you into town on your bike on Tuesday 16 June. You never know. Try it once and the notion of biking around town might become the (good) habit of a lifetime.
